A linear pinch discharge above the Pease-Braginskii current and stabilized by axial shear flow can radiatively collapse to high densities. A thermonuclear detonation wave can then be launched from one end of the discharge channel by ignition with a powerful laser pulse. Axial shear flow stabilization may be realized by injecting a fast moving jet along the pinch discharge channel, possibly in c...
In this paper, three versions of WENO schemes WENO-JS (JCP 126, 1996), WENO-M (JCP 207, 2005) and WENO-Z (JCP 227, 2008) are used for one-dimensional detonation wave simulations with fifth order characteristic based spatial flux reconstruction. Numerical schemes for solving the system of hyperbolic conversation laws using the ZND analytical solution as initial condition are presented. Numerical...
A conservative, upwind numerical method is formulated for the solution of a two-phase (reactive solid and inert gas) model of deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in granular energetic solids. The model, which is representative of most two-phase DDT models, accounts for complete nonequilibrium between phases and constitutes a nonstrictly hyperbolic system of equations having parabolic de...
We present new experimental results demonstrating the initiation and stabilization of an oblique detonation by a hypervelocity projectile. Projectiles 25 mm in diameter were launched at nominal velocities of 2700 m/s into stoichiometric H2-O2-N2 mixtures at pressures between 0.1 and 2.5 bar. A critical threshold in initial pressure was found to be required for the establishment of detonations. ...
Experiments are conducted in a smooth 10 × mm square cross-section, 1-m long channel, closed at the ignition end and open other end. Simultaneous two-direction schlieren visualization is used to investigate three-dimensional dynamics of transition detonation for stoichiometric H2–O2 mixture. Results show existence two distinct structures before onset: (i) asymmetric, composed an oblique shock t...
Historical experimental testing of high-altitude nuclear explosions (HANEs) are known to cause severe and detrimental effects radio frequency signals communications infrastructure. In order study predict the impact HANEs, tractable computational approaches required model complex physical processes involved in detonation wave physics. Modern reduced-order models (ROMs) can enable long-time many-...
