A data depth is one of the most important concepts of nonparametric multivariate analysis. Several depth functions have been introduced since 1980. The halfspace depth is probably the most popular. This depth function has many desirable properties (they are stated in the general definition of statictical depth function). We show a way of generalization of the halfspace depth finding a broader c...
This paper studies single-image depth perception in the wild, i.e., recovering depth from a single image taken in unconstrained settings. We introduce a new dataset “Depth in the Wild” consisting of images in the wild annotated with relative depth between pairs of random points. We also propose a new algorithm that learns to estimate metric depth using annotations of relative depth. Compared to...
This paper presents the results of a study which investigated the impact of cognitive styles on perceptual multimedia quality. More specifically, we examine the different preferences demonstrated by verbalizers and imagers when viewing multimedia content presented with different Quality of Service (QoS) levels pertaining to frame rates and color depth. Recognizing multimedia’s infotainment dual...
Models of stereoscopic depth perception for both natural and random-dot images have focused mainly on the matching of achromatic features of binocular images. Recently, a growing body of research has investigated whether chromatic features can also contribute to the construction of stereoscopic depth. Here we present experiments yielding color-contingent depth aftereffects comparable in magnitu...
Perceptions influence the way we act in our environment based upon judgments assessing required efforts to perform an action and the availability and demand for immediate action on an object (Proffitt, 2006B). Social and physical anxiety has been shown to distort perceptions of depth and perceptions of object size (Stefanucci et al., 2008; CañalBruland et al., 2010). Relatively little work, how...
We describe our implementation of a parallel depth recovery scheme for a four-camera multibaseline stereo in a convergent configuration. Our system is capable of image capture at video rate. This is critical in applications that require three-dimensional tracking. We obtain dense stereo depth data by projecting a light pattern of frequency modulated sinusoidally varying intensity onto the scene...
Multimedia technology has been widely used in the delivery of instructional material, but previous studies have indicated that individual differences, especially cognitive styles, have significant effects on users’ preferences with respect to presentation of multimedia content. However, such research has thus far neglected to examine the effect of cognitive styles on users’ subjective perceptio...
This article examines the relative size of gaps in knowledge and participation between the more and less educated as they vary by the quantity and type of news media use. We predicted that the gap between high and low education groups would be smaller among heavy television news users than among light users, whereas the gap between high and low education groups would be larger among heavy newsp...
A catadioptric stereo system has been developed for depth perception. The system uses two sets of planar mirrors to create two virtual cameras. A design procedure is presented with the aim of building a compact assembly. This has resulted in an inexpensive and compact system that achieves a depth resolution of 5.8 cm at a working distance of 2 m.
