Typically agents have obligations of diiering importance. Consequently we give a hierarchical deenition of obligations, according to which an agent's obligations form a coherent hierarchy and new obligations are de-ned with reference to it. We then show how preferential entailment can be used to formalise the persistence and revision of obligation hierarchies.

This paper studies the logic of a dyadic modal operator for being obliged to meet a condition ρ before a condition δ becomes true. Starting from basic intuitions we arrive at a simple semantics for deadline obligations in terms of branching time models. We show that this notion of deadline obligation can be characterized in the branching time logic CTL. The defined operator obeys intuitive logi...
It is often supposed, as in Professor Kluge's article (1), that one can only acquire an obligation by free consent. This paper argues that although this is true of some types of obligation, including the ones discussed by Professor Kluge, it is by no means true of all. In particular, it is argued, society may legitimately impose obligations on us without our consent, if the obligations are reci...
This paper presents a nonmonotonic deontic logic based on commonsense entailment. It establishes criteria a successful account of obligation should satisfy, and develops a theory that satisfies them. The theory includes two conditional notions of prima facie obligation. One is constitutive; the other is epistemic, and follows nonmonotonically from the constitutive notion. The paper defines unco...
Policy-based systems rely on the separation of concerns, by implementing independently a software system and its associated security policy. XACML (eXtensible Access Control Markup Language) proposes a conceptual architecture and a policy language to reflect this ideal design of policy-based systems. However, while rights are well-captured by authorizations, duties, also called obligations, are...
