A family of polyoxometalates with the composition [H2V3M17O62](6-) features a Dawson-like architecture containing two tetrahedral {VVO4} templates rather than main group hetero-anions ({PO4} or {SO4} etc.) typically associated with classical heteropolyacids, situated within a mixed-metal {MVI17VIVO54} cage and these clusters were first discovered using mass spectrometry.

Herein we report the synthesis of α-Dawson type POM, Li6[α-P2W18O62]·28H2O, directly from the use of Li2WO4 as the tungstate source. The salt obtained was soluble not only in water but also in a range of polar and non-polar organic solvents, such as benzene.

In [6], Dawson and the second author asked whether or not a Banach function algebra with dense invertible group can have a proper Shilov boundary. We give an example of a uniform algebra showing that this can happen, and investigate the properties of such algebras.

Thin films of polyoxometalates that are sensitized with a Ru(II) metallopolymer generate significant photocurrents in the presence of benzyl alcohol and visible light. Significantly, the photocurrent generated by the tungstate based adduct, α-[P(2)W(18)O(62)](6-), is approximately seven fold larger than that found for the Dawson polyoxomolybdate α-[S(2)Mo(18)O(62)](4-).
