A series of novel bis-1,3,4-oxadizaoles were synthesized by oxidative cyclisation of respective Schiff bases derived from dicarbohydrazide using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as catalyst. The synthesized compounds were screened for in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 87), Escherichia coli (MTCC 46) and antifungal activity against Candida albicans (NCIM 3471) by tw...

Proteins are bioactive compounds with high potential to be applied in the biopharmaceutical industry, food science and as biocatalysts. However, protein stability is very difficult maintain outside of native environment, which hinders their applications. Fluorinated ionic liquids (FILs) a promising family surface-active (SAILs) that have an amphiphilic behavior ability self-aggregate aqueous so...

AIM To validate plant species for hypoglycaemic activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four plants were investigated for hypoglycaemic activity by evaluating inhibiting effects on carbohydrate-hydrolising enzymes: alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase. Acetone plant extracts were screened against C2C12 myocytes, 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and Chang liver cells by measuring glucose uptake. Cytotoxicity was d...

Fractions obtained from partitioning of aerial methanolic extract of Euphorbia Aellenii with chloroform (E2), ethyl acetate (E3), n-butanol (E4) and water (E5) were investigated in vitro for their phytotoxicity, insecticidal, anti-leishmanial, cytotoxicity, antibacterial and antifungal activities. Sample E2 appeared to have significant phytotoxic activity. In the insecticidal screening study o...

BACKGROUND Most previous mastic investigators have not considered its potent cytotoxicity that may significantly affect the interpretation of obtained data. In the present study, we re-evaluated several biological activities of mastic extracts, based on chemotherapeutic indexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pulverized mastic gum was extracted with n-hexane and then with ethyl acetate or independentl...

The cytotoxicity of different samples of carbon nanotubes synthesised by catalytic chemical vapour deposition was investigated towards human umbilical vein endothelial cells, using two cytotoxicity standard assays (neutral red assay for the cell viability and MTT assay— tetrazolinium salt—for the cell metabolic activity). No cytotoxicity was found for any sample.

Toxins in culture supernatants and bacterial lysates of S. dysenteriae 1 and S. flexneri were quantitated by a cytotoxicity assay and a newly developed radioimmunoassay. Cytotoxin titers paralleled toxin antigen levels. Thus, variations in cytotoxicity among shigellae probably reflect differences in toxin yield rather than specific activity (cytotoxicity per microgram of toxin antigen).
