We have obtained measurements of the total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadronic final states for 6 energy points (2.6, 3.2, 2.4, 3.55, 4.6, and 5.0 GeV) with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer (BESII). We report preliminary values from this data and outline future plans for a finer scan in the 2-5 GeV energy range.

A crucial personnel decision employers face is whether to fill a limited number of managerial positions with internal hires or external recruits. We present a theoretical and empirical analysis of this decision and how it relates to wage setting and the provision of general training. The theoretical framework is a promotion tournament involving M competing firms with heterogeneous productivitie...

Uncertainties in the NLO calculation of the inclusive jet cross section due to the choice of renormalization scale and parton distribution functions are explored. These are found to be similar to the size of the experimental uncertainties of the measured cross section.

We calculate the nuclear cross section for vector meson exclusive photoproduction within the QCD color dipole picture and in the Regge approach. For the former approach, we have considered the phenomenological saturation model, whereas for the latter we use a model based on the dipole Pomeron framework. Theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given over a large r...

We present our results concerning a systematical analysis of helioseismic implications on solar structure and neutrino production. We find Yph = 0.238 − 0.259, Rb/R⊙ = 0.708 − 0.714 and ρb = (0.185 − 0.199) gr/cm . In the interval 0.2 < R/R⊙ < 0.65, the quantity U = P/ρ is determined with and accuracy of ±5 ◦/◦◦ or better. At the solar center still one has remarkable accuracy, ∆U/U < 4%. We com...

We present a search for a charmed pentaquark decaying strongly to D(∗)−p. Finding no evidence for such a state, we set limits on the cross section times branching ratio relative to D∗− and D− under particular assumptions about the production mechanism.

Two recent results in ep physics using the ZEUS detector at HERA are discussed: a measurement of the prompt photon production cross section in photoproduction, and the first observation of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering in DIS.

We measure the ratio of the isolated direct photon prodution cross section at p s = 630 GeV to that at p s = 1800 GeV for the central (jj < 0:9) and forward (1:6 < jj < 2:5) rapidity regions. We compare the result with next to leading order QCD predictions using CTEQ parton distribution functions.
