IMPORTANCE Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute, self-limited, highly contagious viral illness that commonly affects children younger than 5 years. It is most typically caused by enterovirus 71 or coxsackievirus A16 and results in asymptomatic infection or mild disease. Immunocompetent adults are rarely affected. Recently, there have been increasing reports of a more severe form of HFMD a...

Cryptococcus flavescens strain OH182.9_3C (3C) is a novel biopesticidal agent that can be used to control fusarium head blight of wheat. Here we present the draft genome sequence for 3C, the first for the species C. flavescens. Additionally, several genes that may contribute to the biocontrol activities of 3C were identified in silico.

The cellular pathways that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) manipulates in order to effect its lifelong persistence within hosts and facilitate its transmission between hosts are not well understood. The EBV nuclear antigen 3 (EBNA-3) family of latent infection proteins consists of transcriptional regulators that influence viral and cellular gene expression in EBV-infected cells. To identify EBNA-3B- a...

The replication of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is dependent on the virus-encoded 3C protease (3C(pro)). As in other picornaviruses, 3C(pro) performs most of the proteolytic processing of the polyprotein expressed from the large open reading frame in the RNA genome of the virus. Previous work revealed that the 3C(pro) from serotype A-one of the seven serotypes of FMDV-adopts a trypsin-li...

The picornavirus 3C proteinases are substrate-specific thiol proteases that have been shown by secondary structure predictions and protein modeling studies to be similar to the trypsin-like serine proteases. We have examined several mutations of the 3C proteinase at putative active site and non-active site residues. The effect on 3C-mediated protein processing supports the model of serine prote...

We present five epochs of 15 GHz VLBA observations of 13 AGN. These observations were specially calibrated to detect parsec-scale circular polarization and our calibration techniques are discussed and analyzed in detail. We obtained reliable detections of parsec-scale circular polarization in the radio jets of four AGN: 3C 84, PKS 0528+134, 3C 273, and 3C 279. For each of these objects our dete...

We present and discuss observations made with MERLIN and VLBI at 1.7 and 5 GHz of the two CSS quasars 3C 43 and 3C 298. They show quite different morphologies, the former being a very distorted triple radio source, the latter a small FRII type object. Relativistic effects and structural distortions are discussed. Source ages are evaluated to be of the order of ≈105 years, therefore 3C 43 and 3C...

Active proteinase 3C of hepatitis A virus (HAV) was expressed in bacteria either as a mature enzyme or as a protein fused to the entire polymerase 3D or to a part of it, and their identities were shown by immunoblot analysis. Intermolecular cleavage activity was demonstrated by incubating in vitro-translated and radiolabeled HAV precursor protein P1-P2 with extracts of bacteria transformed with...

Lin, G., Banks, T. and Sternberg, LO., 1991. Variation in 5~3C values of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum and its relations to mangrove carbon. Aquat. Bot., 40: 333-341. Carbon isotope ratios (~3C/t2C) were measured for the leaves of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum Banks ex K/Snig and carbonates of shells collected at the seagrass beds from seven sites along the coast of southern Florida, U....
