The continuum Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in one dimension is lattice discretized in such a way that the drift part is divergence free. This allows to determine explicitly the stationary measures. We map the lattice KPZ equation to a bosonic field theory which has a cubic anti-hermitian nonlinearity. Thereby it is established that the stationary two-point function spreads superdiffusively.

The one-dimensional chain of coupled oscillators with long-range power-law interaction is considered. The equation of motion in the infrared limit are mapped onto the continuum equation with the Riesz fractional derivative of order α, when 0 < α < 2. The evolution of soliton-like and breather-like structures are obtained numerically and compared for both types of simulations: using the chain of...

The formalism of coupled-mode theory, specialized to the continuum of radiation modes, allows us to extend the standard parabolic wave equation to include nonparaxial terms and vectorial effects, and, in particular, to generalize the nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes propagation in the presence of an intensity-dependent refractive index.

We present an approximate and heuristic scheme for the derivation of continuum kinetic equations from microscopic dynamics for stochastic, interacting systems. The method consists of a mean-field-type, decoupled approximation of the master equation followed by the "naive" continuum limit. The Ising model and driven diffusive systems are used as illustrations. The equations derived are in agreem...

A Unified Flow Solver (UFS) has been developed for simulations of rarefied, transitional and continuum flows based on direct numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation coupled to kinetic schemes of gas dynamics. The UFS uses dynamically adaptive mesh and automatic domain decomposition into kinetic and continuum domains based on continuum breakdown criteria. This paper describes UFS extensions...

Quantum mechanics and relativity in the continuum imply the well known spin-statistics connection. However for particles hopping on a lattice, there is no such constraint. If a lattice model yields a relativistic field theory in a continuum limit, this constraint must ”emerge” for physical excitations. We discuss a few models where a spin-less fermion hopping on a lattice gives excitations whic...

Continuum strong QCD is the application of models and continuum quantum field theory to the study of phenomena in hadronic physics, which includes; e.g., the spectrum of QCD bound states and their interactions. Herein I provide a Dyson-Schwinger equation perspective, focusing on qualitative aspects of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in cold, sparse QCD, and also elucidating c...

We study a single quantum particle in discrete spacetime evolving in a causal way. We see that in the continuum limit any massless particle with a two dimensional internal degree of freedom obeys the Weyl equation, provided that we perform a simple relabeling of the coordinate axes or demand rotational symmetry in the continuum limit. It is surprising that this occurs regardless of the specific...

An exact lattice Langevin equation is derived for the ballistic deposition model of surface growth. The continuum limit of this equation is dominated by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation at all length and time scales. For a one-dimensional substrate the solution of the exact lattice Langevin equation yields the KPZ scaling exponents without any extrapolation. For a two-dimensional substrat...

The predicted spectral phase of a fiber continuum pulsed source rigorously quantified by the scalar generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is found to be in excellent agreement with that measured by multiphoton intra-pulse interference phase scan (MIIPS) with background subtraction. This cross-validation confirms the absolute pulse measurement by MIIPS and the transform-limited compression ...
