Intracerebral haemorrhage is a rare complication of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). We present the clinico-pathologic findings of a 62 year-old patient with systemic involvement by PAN, who developed temporary decrease of consciousness and a mild left hemisyndrome due to a small right dorsal thalamic haemorrhage. No clear cause for the haemorrhage was found on postmortem examination.

Neurological, CT and high-field (1.5T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were correlated in 6 patients previously clinically diagnosed as having suffered small vertebrobasilar infarct. MRI demonstrated infarcts in areas where CT was nearly always negative. MRI allowed very precise clinico-topographic correlations and appears to be the preferred imaging technique in vertebrobasilar infarcts.

This report concerns a clinico-pathological study of 60 patients afflicted with primary pontine hemorrhage. The illness was fatal in 43, 17 patients survived. Ophthalmic signs, autonomic disturbances and transient visual hallucination were observed and discussed.
