Choline and betaine are essential nutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism and have been hypothesised to affect breast cancer risk. Functional polymorphisms in genes encoding choline-related one-carbon metabolism enzymes, including phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PEMT), choline dehydrogenase (CHDH) and betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT), have important roles in choli...

Choline is involved in relevant neurochemical processes. In particular, it is the precursor and metabolite of acetylcholine (ACh). Choline is an essential component of different membrane phospholipids that are involved in intraneuronal signal transduction. On the other hand, cholinergic precursors are involved in ACh release and carry out a neuroprotective effect based on an anti-inflammatory a...

BACKGROUND Choline is critical for a variety of biological functions and has been investigated as a biomarker for various pathological conditions including acute coronary syndrome. METHODS A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was used to quantify choline in whole blood and plasma in freshly collected samples prepared with ultrafiltration or protein precipitation....

Choline. Choline has been identified as a required nutrient for many species including humans, chicks, and pigs. Choline is found in low concentrations in most feeds, ranging from 0.04% in corn silage and alfalfa hay to 0.3% in protein sources such as soybean meal and cottonseed meal (DM basis). Its low concentrations in feeds are indicative of the low amounts required by livestock (e.g. 3 g/da...

The methylation of guanidoacetic acid by liver slices is accelerated by methionine; choline, under these conditions, exerts no significant accelerating effect.’ In view of the fact that homocystine plus choline can replace methionine for growth,” and of the isotope experiments which proved the transfer in viva of the methyl groups of choline to creatine,3 it has been suggested, from indirect ev...

Choline is essential in diets fed to most young vertebrates, but previous studies did not confirm the essentiality of choline in diets fed to tilapia. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the essentiality of dietary choline in such diets. The basal diet used in both experiments contained 32 g crude protein/100 g diet (10.1 g crude protein from casein and gelatin, and 21.9 g from a crystal...

Thermodynamic analyses and molecular dynamics calculations demonstrated that i-motifs in a hydrated ionic liquid of choline dihydrogen phosphate (choline dhp) were more stable than G-quadruplexes due to choline ion binding to loop regions in the i-motifs. Interestingly, the i-motifs formed even at physiological pH in the choline dhp-containing solution.
