There has been a worldwide increase in the incidence of asthma, and the disease has greatly impacted the public health care system. Chlamydia pneumoniae has been reported as a possible contributing factor in asthma. The organism has been detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in bronchial tissue, but there has been no direct evidence of viability. To determine the frequency of viable Chlam...

Helicobacter pylori and Chlamydia pneumoniae are both pathogenic to humans. Their genomes have recently been completed, allowing detailed study of their evolution and organization. Here we describe an evolutionary analysis of the H. pylori and C. pneumoniae genes that encode their outer-membrane proteins. By comparing complete genome sequences of two H. pylori strains and two C. pneumoniae stra...

To clarify the endemic status of Chlamydia pneumoniae in Korea, the incidence of antibodies in 564 serum samples from healthy individuals, patients with respiratory infection, and cord blood specimens was evaluated. We conclude that C. pneumoniae infection is highly endemic in Korea and that this infection is associated with acute respiratory diseases.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a ubiquitous intracellular pathogen, first associated with human respiratory disease and subsequently detected in a range of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Here we report the draft genome sequence for strain B21 of C. pneumoniae, isolated from the endangered Australian marsupial the western barred bandicoot.

The role of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in Chlamydia pneumoniae atherogenesis was evaluated in TNF-alpha p55 receptor-deficient C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet. No acceleration of atherosclerotic lesion development was observed in infected mice compared to uninfected mice, indicating that TNF-alpha plays a role in the acceleration of atherosclerosis by C. pneumoniae.

The effects of simvastatin treatment on Chlamydia pneumoniae lung infection, inflammation, and serum lipids in mouse model were studied. Simvastatin decreased viable chlamydial counts and increased inflammatory cell infiltrates in the lung tissue, suggesting that simvastatin treatment had both antichlamydial and immunomodulatory effects during an acute C. pneumoniae infection.

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection has long been suspected as a possible cause of atherosclerosis and has been frequently detected in atheromatous plaques of the coronary arteries. Nevertheless, its distribution is not correlated to the severity or extent of the disease, but it would support the hypothesis that the organism may be an active factor in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. A group of ...

BACKGROUND An association of chronic Chlamydia pneumoniae infection to coronary heart disease has been suggested recently. In a recent study, we demonstrated circulating immune complexes containing chlamydial genus-specific lipopolysaccharide in patients with coronary heart disease. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether C. pneumoniae species-specific immune complexes are...
