This study was conducted to investigate the effects of infrared processing of barley for 60, 90, 120 and 150 seconds (s) on protein hydrophobicity, in vitro protein digestibility, degradation characteristics of protein and starch and its feeding effect on ruminal pH of sheep. The surface hydrophobicity of protein increased (P

To investigate the importance of increased hydrophobicity at the amino end of antimicrobial peptides, a dermaseptin derivative was used as a template for a systematic acylation study. Through a gradual increase of the acyl moiety chain length, hydrophobicity was monitored and further modulated by acyl conversion to aminoacyl. The chain lengths of the acyl derivatives correlated with a gradual i...

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection caused by Sporothrix species, with brasiliensis as prevalent pathogen in Latin America. Despite its clinical importance, the virulence factors of S. and their impact on pathogenesis sporotrichosis are still poorly understood. This study evaluated morphostructural plasticity brasiliensis, fungus that causes sporotrichosis. Three cell surface characteristics, ...

To clarify the pathogenicity and the pathogenic factors of Candida tropicalis strains, five strains, IFO 0199, IFO 0587, IFO 0589, IFO 1400, and IFO 1647, of C. tropicalis were tested for their lethality to mice, adherence to Hela cells, hydrophobicity, cell growth under acidic conditions (pH 2.0-5.9), and sucrose assimilation using C. albicans NIH A-207 strain as reference. The pathogenicity f...

The different methods of the nanopatterning of polymer layers, UV laser ablation, plasma depositing technique, electrochemical deposition and soft lithography are discussed as methods of surface patterning. The different surface functionalities are described, especially the effects of increased surface hydrophobicity/ superhydrophobicity created by coating substrates with low surface energy mat...

Pathogenic E coli have adhesive properties which are mirrored by an increase in their surface hydrophobicity. E coli isolated from patients with ulcerative colitis possess a mannose resistant adhesin similar to that found in pathogenic E coli. In this study 42 E coli isolates from patients with colitis have been compared with 15 from controls to assess hydrophobicity and cellular adherence. The...

The minimum inhibitory concentration and post-antibiotic effects of an antimicrobial agent are parameters to be taken into consideration when determining its dosage schedules. The in vitro post-antibiotic effects on cell surface hydrophobicity and bacterial adherence were examined in one strain of group B streptococci. Exposure of the microorganism for 2 h at 37 degrees C to 1 x MIC of penicill...

A simple replica method is described for the rapid identification of colonies of bacteria which adhere to polystyrene. A correlation was found between the adherence of bacterial strains to polystyrene and cell surface hydrophobicity, suggesting the use of this technique in screening for cell surface mutants and in the isolation of hydrophobic bacteria from nature.
