Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is one of the polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which has biodegradable and biocompatible properties. They are adopted in the biomedical field, in, for example, medical implants and drug delivery carriers. This study seeks to promote the production of PHB by Vibrio sp. BM-1, isolated from a marine environment by improving constituents of medium and implementing an appropria...

Glycolysis is an essential component of cellular metabolism associated with pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). Two new papers, one by Gu et al. (2016) in this issue of Cell Stem Cell and one by Zhang et al. (2016) in Cell Reports, demonstrate that glycolytic flux is dynamically increased in human primed PSCs upon feeder-free cultivation or conversion into the naive state.

BACKGROUND As an alternative for economic biodiesel production, the microbial production of extracellular fatty acid from renewable resources is receiving more concerns recently, since the separation of fatty acid from microorganism cells is normally involved in a series of energy-intensive steps. Many attempts have been made to construct fatty acid producing strains by targeting genes in the f...

Recently 10 T-cell lines were established from patients with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). During establishment of these cell lines, it was found that when T-cell lines expressing the ATL-associated retroviral antigen were cocultivated with 8C cat cells, multinucleated syncytia were formed. Retroviral antigen-negative T-cell lines did not induce syncytia. Peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained fr...

In the continuously growing field of industrial biotechnology the scale-up from lab to industrial scale is still a major hurdle to develop competitive bioprocesses. During scale-up the productivity of single cells might be affected by bioreactor inhomogeneity and population heterogeneity. Currently, these complex interactions are difficult to investigate. In this report, design, fabrication and...

Oocyte cumulus complexes were aspirated from 3 to 5 mm follicles of cows prestimulated with 2.000 IU PMSG 24 h before slaughter. Oocytes matured in culture were fertilized in vitro by heparinized freshly ejaculated or epididymal spermatozoa. The cultivation procedure for fertilized eggs was the same as that used for cultivation of oocytes. From 163 matured oocytes, 109 cleaved to the 2-cell sta...

A large-scale statistical experimental design was used to determine essential cultivation parameters that affect biomass accumulation and geraniol production in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun NN) cell suspension cultures. The carbohydrate source played a major role in determining the geraniol yield and factors such as filling volume, inoculum size and light were less important...

Silica-based nanoparticles (NPs) pose great potential for medical and biological applications; however, their interactions with living cells have not been investigated in full. The objective of this study was to analyze the mechanical characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells when cultured in the presence of silica (Si) and silica-boron (SiB) nanoparticles. Cell stiffness was measured using ato...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cultivation potential of cartilage taken from the debrided edge of a chronic lesion of the articular surface. A total of 14 patients underwent arthroscopy of the knee for a chronic lesion on the femoral condyles or trochlea. In addition to the routine cartilage biopsy, a second biopsy of cartilage was taken from the edge of the lesion. The cells isolate...

SUMMARY To study the effect of vero cells on preimplantation mouse embryos two groups of experiment were carried out. In experiment 1, pronuclear stage mouse embryos were co-cultured with Vero cells in RPMI medium and were examined under microscope for 4 days with 24h interval. The results showed co-cultured group developed better compared to control (87% to 80%, P<0.05) although, the rate ...
