We report resonant multiple Andreev reflections in a multiwall carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. The position and magnitude of the subharmonic gap structure is found to depend strongly on the level positions of the single-electron states which are adjusted with a gate electrode. We discuss a theoretical model of the device and compare the calculated differential cond...

We report the characterization of electronic shell filling in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes by low-temperature transport measurements. Nanotube quantum dots with average conductance approximately (1-2)e(2)/h exhibit a distinct four-electron periodicity for electron addition as well as signatures of Kondo and inelastic cotunneling. The Hartree-Fock parameters that govern the electronic...

Most experts agree that it is too early to say how quantum computers will eventually be built, and several nanoscale solid-state schemes are being implemented in a range of materials. Nanofabricated quantum dots can be made in designer configurations, with established technology for controlling interactions and for reading out results. Epitaxial quantum dots can be grown in vertical arrays in s...

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) quantum dots (CNQDs) were prepared from bulk g-C3N4 directly by a thermal-chemical etching process. The CNQDs show strong blue emission as well as upconversion behavior, which can be used as universal energy-transfer components in visible-light-driven metal-free photocatalytic systems.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are highly promising since they can potentially solve global energy issues. The development of new photosensitizers is the key to fully realizing perspectives proposed to DSSCs. Being cheap and nontoxic, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as attractive candidates for this purpose. However, current methodologies to build up CQD-sensitized solar cells (CQDS...

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) represent an important class of luminescent quantum dots owing to their low toxicity and superior biocompatibility. Chemical functionalization of GQDs and subsequent combination with other materials further provide attractive techniques for advanced bioapplications. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of fluorescent organosilane-functionalized graphene quantum ...

Recently reported photoluminescent nanographene oxides (nGOs), i.e. nanographene oxidised with a sulfuric/nitric acid mixture (SNOx method), have tuneable photoluminescence and are scalable, simple and fast to produce optical probes. This material belongs to the vast class of photoluminescent carbon nanostructures, including carbon dots, nanodiamonds (NDs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), all of ...

A simple and straightforward synthetic approach for carbon nanodots (C-dots) is proposed. The strategy is based on a one-step hydrothermal chemical reduction with thiourea and urea, leading to high quantum yield C-dots. The obtained C-dots are well-dispersed with a uniform size and a graphite-like structure. A synergistic reduction mechanism was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spe...

For coherent electron spins, hyperfine coupling to nuclei in the host material can either be a dominant source of unwanted spin decoherence1–3 or, if controlled effectively, a resource enabling storage and retrieval of quantum information4–7. To investigate the effect of a controllable nuclear environment on the evolution of confined electron spins, we have fabricated and measured gate-defined ...
