CHROMagar Candida is a new differential culture medium that allows the isolation and presumptive identification of species of yeast of clinical importance. During the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of fungal infections caused by Candida species. The aim of the study was to isolate and identify Candida species from the oral cavity with CHROMagar Candida...

Background: Looking at the increased incidence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis and refractory resulting from such non-albicans Candida species in recent decades, this study was performed aiming the use of rapid biochemical and molecular detection of drug-resistant Candida species in response to fluconazole in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. ...

Whole-cell proteins from isolates of five Candida species (Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis and Candida guilliermondii) were separated by SDS-PAGE and the profiles obtained were converted into a binary data matrix that produced a cophenetic correlation phenogram. The analysis of the phenogram allowed detection of the cophenetic correlation levels existi...

The in vitro activities of caspofungin and micafungin against 1,038 yeast isolates have been determined. The caspofungin and micafungin MICs were lower for Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida tropicalis than for Candida parapsilosis, Candida guilliermondii, and Candida krusei. A clear correlation was seen between the MICs for the two drugs.

Large forms of Candida are characteristically present in invasive lesions and are often cleared by host defenses. Therefore, an in vitro system was developed to study interactions between leukocytes and pseudohyphae. By light, phase contrast, and electron microscopic observations, in the absence of serum, neutrophils attached to and spread over the surfaces of partially ingested pseudohyphae, w...

The objective of this work was to compare the usefulness of a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay to that of the ATB ID32C kit (bioMérieux, France) for identification of different species of Candida isolated from clinical specimens. The RAPD-PCR patterns obtained with OPE-18 primer for identification of clinical isolates were consistent, and the different independent assays revealed...

High vaginal swabs (HVS) obtained from 500 volunteers in Edo State, Nigeria which comprised 394 contraceptive users and 106 non-contraceptive users were screened for the prevalence of Candida species using standard procedures. Results revealed the isolation of Candida species in 246 of volunteers. These included Candida albicans 174 (38.4%), Candida pseudotropicalis 20 (4%), Candida stellatoide...
