A solid powder of hydrogen bonded dimers of a tetraurea calix[4]arene is able to exchange the encapsulated guest in contact with the vapor of a second guest. The molecules of a guest-free powder obtained from a polar solvent cannot rearrange in the solid phase to form new guest-filled capsules under these conditions.

Just mixing of solutions of tetracationic diphosphine ligands and tetraanionic calix[4]arene building blocks leads to the formation of supramolecular heterocapsules that coordinate a palladium metal within the cavity of the assembly, giving rise to a new class of potential supramolecular transition metal catalysts.

Supramolecular aggregates formed through the association of an amphiphilic tetra-O-butylsulfonate calix[4]arene 1 were investigated in aqueous solution by a combination of different techniques (NMR, DLS and AFM). The ability of the micellar aggregates of calixarene 1 to increase the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs was studied.

Size selective growth of palladium nano-particles 2-7 nm in diameter on the surface of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) (derived from catalytic cracking of methane) in water involves pretreating the CNOs with p-phosphonic acid calix[8]arene then H(2)PdCl(4) followed by dynamic thin film processing under hydrogen in a vortex fluidic device.

A crystal structure of lysozyme in complex with p-sulfonato-calix[4]arene (sclx4) reveals a linear assembly of protein tetramers glued together by protein-calixarene interactions. One interaction involves encapsulation of the highly exposed C-terminal Arg128. The other involves an intricate protein-bound complex of sclx4, Mg(2+) and a fragment of polyethylene glycol.

Effective investigation of biomolecular structure and function with chip-basedmodern instruments often requires reliable and steady attachment of designatedbiomolecules on substrate. Here, we investigated the formation of self-assembled monolayer(SAM) with a new calix[4]arene derivative containing bisazacrown ether at the lower rim(calix[4]bisazacrown) where ammonium moieties of proteins can ma...

The chemistry of calixarenes has received increasing attention in the field of Supramolecular Chemistry, as this class of molecules offers a suitable platform for the synthesis of receptors for anions, cations and neutral molecules. Their structures allow acylation and alkylaton reactions of the phenolic groups. The conformation and degree of substitution of acylated products are related to the...

An amphiphilic calix[4]arene derivative bearing four guanidino moieties at the upper rim and four dodecyl chains at the lower rim was shown to form stable solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) in water. The study of the interactions of these cationic SLNs with DNA revealed a sequence-dependent groove binding mechanism.
