The importance of Chlamydia trachomatis as an etiologic agent in the development of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is well documented. Although there are numerous antimicrobial agents that are effective against C. trachomatis, one of the most frequent combinations that is used to treat PID is clindamycin and gentamicin. It has recently been suggested that Chlamydia trachomatis may be a common cause of acute pharyngitis in adults. In a prospective investigation of 95 college students with acute pharyngitis, C. trachomatis was not isolated from any pharyngeal cultures. Further investigations are needed to better define the role of C. trachomatis in upper respiratory tract infections.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the major cause of tubal occlusion, and is also associated with IVF failure and spontaneous abortion. These infections are asymptomatic in most individuals and can persist in the genital tract for long periods of time in a form resistant to immune destruction. A significant percentage of couples seeking treatment for infertility might, therefore, harbour C. trachomatis ...

Chlamydia trachomatis L2 invasively attacks lymphatic and subepithelial tissues of the genital tract during the formation of primary lesions. This subsequently results in lymphadenopathy, and suggests a greater propensity for systemic dissemination. However, whether lymphocytes are a potential vehicle cell for the dissemination of this infection remains unknown. We therefore assessed the growth...

BACKGROUND The participation of laboratories in external quality assessment (EQA) programs is required for the quality assurance of nucleic acid amplification of Chlamydia trachomatis. This study aimed to construct a new quality control (QC) material applicated in EQA of C. trachomatis PCR. METHODS A QC material-HTB-SiHa cells transfected with a recombinant plasmid containing the cryptic plas...

OBJECTIVES Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the cervix and uterus has been hypothesised to be a co-factor for cervical cancer. We performed a cross sectional study in Bogota, Colombia, where cervical cancer rates are high, to determine the prevalence and determinants of C trachomatis infection, and in particular its association with human papillomavirus (HPV). METHODS 1829 low income sexual...
