OBJECTIVES To identify risk factors for KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) enteric colonization at intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Recently, the emergence and spread of KPC-producing Enterobacteriaceae in healthcare facilities has become an important issue. Understanding the extent of the reservoir in ICUs may be important for targeted intervention. METHODS A prospective observ...

OBJECTIVES To describe the molecular epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Brooklyn, NY and assess the in vitro activity of various antibiotic combinations. METHODS Clinical isolates with suspected carbapenem resistance were referred to the central research laboratory from August 2003 to June 2004. Isolates underwent MIC testing, ribotyping, and were analysed for the p...

The bla(KPC-3) and qnrB19 determinants of transferable Klebsiella pneumoniae plasmid pLRM24 reside within a complex region consisting of a Tn1331 backbone into which a Tn4401-like element and qnrB19 mobilized by an adjacent ISEcp1 insertion sequence have been inserted. This novel element represents a coalescence of genes conferring multidrug resistance in K. pneumoniae.

A Klebsiella pneumoniae epidemic strain that coproduced carbapenemase KPC-2 (K. pneumoniae carbapenemase 2) and 16S rRNA methylase ArmA has emerged in Poland. Four nonduplicate isolates from patients in a hospital in Warsaw, Poland, were found to carry the bla(KPC-2) and armA genes on ca. 50-kb and 90-kb plasmids, respectively. Tn4401 with a 100-bp deletion in the variable region was detected i...

Abstract Bacterial carbapenem resistance, especially when mediated by transferable carbapenemases, is of important public health concern. An increased number metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated in a tertiary hospital Thessaloniki, Greece, called for further genetic investigation. The study included 29 non-repetitive resistant K. isolates phenotypically cha...

The purpose of this study was to identify the genes coding for resistance to ceftazidime and imipenem and describe the molecular epidemiology of A. baumannii strains isolated from a clinical center in Colombia. Twenty isolates of imipenem-resistant A. baumannii from an equal number of patients with nosocomial infections were obtained. Primers were used to amplify genes bla IMP, bla VIM, bla OXA...

BACKGROUND Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains a leading cause of severe wound infection and mortality in burn patients. OBJECTIVES The current study aimed to determine the prevalence of Ambler class A and D β-lactamases among P. aeruginosa isolated from infected burn injuries in Tehran, Iran. PATIENTS AND METHODS Bacteriological samples were taken from burn patients with clinical symptoms of bu...

Acinetobacter baumannii strains resistant to all beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones have emerged in many medical centers. Potential mechanisms contributing to antimicrobial resistance were investigated in 40 clinical isolates endemic to New York City. The isolates were examined for the presence of various beta-lactamases, aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, and mutations in gyrA ...
