We present the fabrication of lipid nanoscaffolds inside carbon nanotube arrays by employing the nanostructural self-assembly of lipid molecules. The nanoscaffolds are finely tunable into model biomembrane-like architectures (planar), soft nanochannels (cylindrical) or 3-dimensionally ordered continuous bilayer structures (cubic). Carbon nanotube arrays hosting the above nanoscaffolds are forme...

We probe the dynamic strength of multiple biotin-streptavidin adhesion bonds under linear loading using the biomembrane force probe setup for dynamic force spectroscopy. Measured rupture force histograms are compared to results from a master equation model for the stochastic dynamics of bond rupture under load. This allows us to extract the distribution of the number of initially closed bonds. ...

Chemical epigenetic manipulation was applied to a deep marine-derived fungus, Aspergillus sp. SCSIOW3, resulting in significant changes of the secondary metabolites. One new diphenylether-O-glycoside (diorcinol 3-O-α-D-ribofuranoside), along with seven known compounds, were isolated from the culture treated with a combination of histone deacetylase inhibitor (suberohydroxamic acid) and DNA meth...

Experimental studies are reviewed to construct a model for the hydrocarbon chain disordering in “fluid” phospholipid bilayers. Together with approximate expressions for the interactions between neighboring molecules, this information is used to construct a simple statistical thermodynamic theory of the chain “melting” based on the Bragg-Williams approximation. Two unknown parameters in the theo...

Recent simulations have indicated that the traditional model for topographical fluctuations in biomembranes should be enriched to include molecular tilt. Here we report the first experimental data supporting this enrichment. Utilizing a previously posited tilt-dependent model, a height-height correlation function was derived. The x-ray scattering from a liquid crystalline stack of oriented flui...

We discuss new examples of the constructive role of environmental fluctuations in biophysical processes, namely quantitative enhancement and qualitative sharpening of the outgoing signal in the intercellular signal transduction, e.g., in the synaptic links. An experimental check in a chemical flow reactor is suggested.

We develop equilibrium fluctuation formulae for the isothermal elastic moduli of discrete biomembrane models at different scales. We account for the coupling of large stretching and bending strains of triangulated network models endowed with harmonic and dihedral angle potentials, on the basis of the discrete-continuum approach presented in Schmidt and Fraternali (J Mech Phys Solids 60:172-180,...

Biological membranes are complex quasi two-dimensional, supramolecular assemblies of a diverse variety of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, that compartmentalize living matter into cells and subcellular structures. Membranes are held together by the hydrophobic effect, which is an entropy-driven process originating from strong attractive forces between water molecules. Membrane organization a...
