Fluorocarbons are lipophobic and non-polar molecules that exhibit remarkable biocompatibility, with applications in liquid ventilation and synthetic blood. The unique properties of these compounds have also enabled mass spectrometry imaging of tissues where the fluorocarbons act as a Teflon-like coating for nanostructured surfaces to assist in desorption/ionization. Here we report fluorinated g...

An approach for mercury ions (Hg(2+)) sensing based on the Hg(2+)-induced aggregation of thymine (T)-SH-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been reported. The T-SH ligands that we synthesized can easily be coupled to the surface of AuNPs through the Au-S bond and can recognize Hg(2+) with high selectivity by forming a T-Hg-T complex with strong affinity. For the T-SH-functionalized Au...

Development of multifunctional nanomaterials, one of the most interesting and advanced research areas in the field of nanotechnology, is anticipated to revolutionize cancer diagnosis and treatment. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are now being widely utilized in bio-imaging and phototherapy due to their tunable and highly sensitive optical and electronic properties (the surface plasmon resonance). A...

Small gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that possess interfacial methyl-2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoate moieties have been successfully synthesized (Staudinger-AuNPs) and characterized by multi-nuclear MR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In particular, XPS was remarkably sensitive for charac...

Biomimetic block copolymer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared by autoreduction. Excellent colloidal stability of the AuNPs was observed at a high salt concentration and over a wide pH range. Functional AuNPs are useful for label-free detection of an inflammation biomarker, C-reactive protein (CRP).

A novel DNA scaffold, called a DNA slit, was designed for the programmed positioning of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), and various patterns of thiolated DNA slits were constructed. AuNPs were correctly placed at the predesigned positions in the thiolated DNA slits, indicating that the thiolated staples and the slit cavities guide the correct assembly of AuNPs.

Three novel gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) composites protected by perylene bisimide derivatives have been designed and synthesized. Thanks to the rational molecular design, AuNPs capped by N,N'-2,6-bis(4-aminomethylpyridine)-1,6,7,13-tert-[4-(hydroxymethyl)phenoxy-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate]-3,4,9,10- tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (8SP-AuNPs) exhibited unusual enhancement in fluorescence inte...

Characterization and the antibacterial potential of gold (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticle (SNPs) biosynthesized greenly using exopolysaccharides (EPS) and Culture Free Supernatant (CFS) of Wesiella confusa against some multidrug resistance (MDR) E. coli was investigated. The biosynthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectra, Fourier Transfor...

A new signal amplification strategy based on simultaneous application of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was employed to improve the sensitivity of an electrochemical immunoassay for detection of human IgG (hIgG), as a model antigenic protein. This immunoassay system was fabricated on magnetic carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNT/Fe3...
