In this article, the current knowledge and knowledge gaps in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock and plants and importance in terms of animal and human health are discussed. Some recommendations are provided for generation of the data required in order to develop risk assessments for AMR within agriculture and for risks through the food chain to animals and h...

Antimicrobial stewardship is recognized as a key component to stop the current European spread of antimicrobial resistance. It has also become evident that antimicrobial resistance is a problem that cannot be tackled by single institutions or physicians. Prevention of antimicrobial resistance needs rigorous actions at ward level, institution level, national level and at supra-national levels. C...

conclusions cap/hap remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. bacterial resistance is increasing and adds to the difficulty in treating these patients. newer drugs are available but should be used judiciously and in the right setting. context the incidence and prevalence of both community and hospital acquired pneumonia has remained relatively constant over the ...

Update Dr. Aubry-Damon is a microbiologist specializing in antimicrobial resistance at the National Institute for Public Health Surveillance, Saint-Maurice, France. The institute has recently carried out an exploratory study of a national program for surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in France. Dr. Aubry-Damon also collaborates closely with the French National Reference Center for Antibi...

Bacteria have acquired extensive resistance mechanisms to protect themselves against antibiotic action. Today the bacterial membrane has become one of the "final frontiers" in the search for new compounds acting on novel targets to address the threat of multi-drug resistant (MDR) and XDR bacterial pathogens. β-Hairpin antimicrobial peptides are amphipathic, membrane-binding antibiotics that exh...

Raising public awareness of the need to use antibiotics appropriately is a major focus of the UK Government's strategy to tackle antimicrobial resistance. To investigate the public's views on antibiotic use and resistance we conducted a survey of 120 people as part of patient engagement activities held at University College London Hospital in June 2015.

Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide threat and a problem with large clinical and economic impact. Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs are a solution to curb resistance development. A problem of resistance is a separation of actions and consequences, financial and clinical. Such a separation makes it difficult to create support among stakeholders leading to a lack of sense of responsibility. ...

FosA, a glutathione S-transferase that inactivates fosfomycin, has been reported as the cause of enzymatic resistance to fosfomycin. We show that multiple lineages of FosA-producing extended spectrum β-lactamase Escherichia coli have circulated in France since 2012, potentially reducing the efficacy of fosfomycin in treating infections with antimicrobial drug-resistant gram-negative bacilli.

We describe here the whole-genome sequence and basic characteristics of Escherichia coli isolate 15-AB01393, recovered from German beef within a national monitoring program in 2015. This isolate was identified as an extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing E. coli strain of multilocus sequence type (MLST) ST58 harboring the antimicrobial resistance genes blaCTX-M-1, mph(A), sul2, dfrA5, strA, an...

Vibrio cholerae resistance to third-generation cephalosporins is rarely reported. We detected a strain that was negative for extended-spectrum β-lactamase and positive for the AmpC disk test, modified Hodge test, and EDTA disk synergy test and harbored the blaDHA-1 and blaNDM-1 genes. The antimicrobial drug susceptibility profile of V. cholerae should be monitored.
