mon cell emboli. Some blood-borne emboli can no circulate (4—7,9—li). Probably such emboli are not sources of metastases unless they are arrested ultimately in sites favorable for their development (3). This report concerns the effect of cortisone on arrest of tumor cell emboli. Past investigations have shown that cortisone increases metastases (1, 2). Cortisone may promote metastases by in...

The use of an arterial line filter (ALF) within the pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit is not a new concept. It has always presented the perfusionist with a circuit component that while valuable, increased prime volume. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change in prime volume and emboli between a conventional oxygenator with separate ALF and a new generation oxygenator w...

Gaseous microemboli (GME) remain a challenge for cardiopulmonary bypass procedures in adult as well as pediatric cardiac surgery patients. The present study tested the effectiveness of a new adult membrane oxygenator in models both with and without an integrated arterial filter to evaluate GME trapping capability and determine membrane pressure drops at various flow rates and temperatures. The ...

A case of cardiomyopathy with systemic emboli is reported. Two dimensional and M-mode echocardiography showed abnormal intracavitary echoes. After further systemic emboli, echocardiograms showed the complete disappearance of the abnormal echoes found previously in the apex, which suggested that the emboli resulted from detachment of the left ventricular mural thrombi.

Background and Purpose Doppler ultrasound detection of emboli signals may assist in distinguishing erabolic from thrombotic stroke. Selected patient groups have a high incidence of such signals. We have examined consecutive stroke cases to identify the incidence of Doppler emboli in different etiologic subtypes of stroke. Methods Forty-five patients presenting with first-ever acute carotid terr...

Objective Usually only FDA-approved oxygenators are subject of studies by the international scientific community. The objective of this study is to evaluate two types of neonatal membrane oxygenators in terms of transmembrane pressure gradient, hemodynamic energy transmission and gaseous microemboli capture in simulated cardiopulmonary bypass systems. Methods We investigated the Braile Infant...
