We describe two immunosuppressed female patients with fever and Actinomyces odontolyticus bacteremia, a combination documented once previously in an immunocompetent male patient. The patients were treated with doxycycline and clindamycin; these drugs, with beta-lactams, are effective treatment for A. odontolyticus infections.
Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive infection caused by anaerobic bacteria, primarily from the genus Actinomyces. Primary actinomycosis of the breast is rare and presents as a mass like density which can mimic malignancy. Mammography, ultrasonography and histopathologic examination is required for diagnosis. Treatment should consist of high doses of antibacterials for a prolonged period of ti...
In this paper an unusual case of lymphadenopathy associated with Actinomyces infection is reported. In the literature, there are only two cases presented with histopathologic features. A forty-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with painless mass on the neck. Clinical examination revealed a firm mass on the right submandibular region. The patient had no malignancy history. A cys...
Of 158 oral Streptococcus milleri strains, 46 exhibited cellular coaggregation with the reagent strains of the actinomyces coaggregation groups A, B, and/or E. All but 1 of the 33 serotype b, e, f/F, and k/G strains belonged to streptococcus coaggregation group 2, and only 14 strains of limited seroclasses (g, i, Lancefield group F, or untypeable) appeared to be members of group 5, 3, or 4 (10,...
splenic abscess is not a common condition and actinomyces as a cause is very rarely reported. we report a case of actinomycosis of spleen in a 12 year-old boy, with a few days history of abdominal pain and fever. past medical history was not significant. due to sever abdominal pain and tenderness condition laparatomy was done that a small perforated area was seen on hilum of spleen, so splenect...
ber, similar to fungi. Recently, microsporidia have been phylogenetically shown to be fungi, and their tissue behavior akin to that of fungi would be expected. Our patient had clinical features of herpetic viral endotheliitis at the initial visit, which improved initially with antiviral treatment. There is a possibility that the patient may have had viral keratitis initially and then became sec...
