Background: Acinetobacter baumannii is a non-fermentative gram-negative coccobacill that has high level of resistance to antimicrobial agents. Biofilm formation is an important feature of most clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp, this led to higher resistance to antibiotics. The current study aimed to assess the ability of biofilm production and to determine the frequency of bap gene in cl...
Pathogenic bacteria have increasingly been resisting to antimicrobial therapy. Recently, resistance problem has been relatively much worsened in Gram-negative bacilli. Acinetobacter spp. are typical nosocomial pathogens causing infections and high mortality, almost exclusively in compromised hospital patients. Acinetobacter spp. are intrinsically less susceptible to antibiotics than Enterobacte...
Clinical infections caused by Acinetobacter spp. have increasing public health concerns because of their global occurrence and ability to acquire multidrug resistance. Acinetobacter calcoaceti-cus–Acinetobacter baumannii (ACB) complex encompasses A. calcoa-ceticus, A. baumannii, A. pittii (formerly genomic species 3), and A nosocomial (formerly genomic species 13TU), which are predominantly res...
OBJECTIVE To describe the rates and patterns of colistin and tigecycline resistance among Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) isolates from clinical specimens from 2 major hospitals in Riyadh Region over a 2-year period. METHODS This is a retrospective review of records of all clinical isolates of A. baumannii from the departments of microbiology at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Rese...
In search of an effective DNA typing technique for Acinetobacter baumannii strains for hospital epidemiology use, the performance and convenience of a new target sequence was evaluated. Using known genomic sequences of Acinetobacter baumannii strains AR 319754 and ATCC 17978, we developed single-locus variable-number direct-repeat analysis using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment le...
While we were isolating Bartonella quintana from body lice, 40 Acinetobacter baumannii strains were also isolated and genotyped. One clone was unique and the other was ampicillin susceptible. A. baumannii DNA was later detected in 21% of 622 lice collected worldwide. These findings show an A. baumannii epidemic in human body lice.
Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that is frequently associated with nosocomial infections. Bacteriophages infecting A. baumannii can be used as effective agents to control these infections. Here, we announce the complete genome sequence of the lytic bacteriophage LZ35 infecting A. baumannii isolates.
conclusions coexistence of the blaoxa-51, blaoxa-23 and blaoxa-24/40 like genes, along with formation of strong biofilm, in mdr-ab strains particularly with indiscriminate use of imipenem, complicated treatment of the patients infected with these bacteria in the hospitals understudy. background emergence and spread of carbapenemase (blaoxa) genes in multidrug resistant acinetobacter baumannii (...
the emergence of multidrug resistance (mdr) and extensively drug resistance (xdr) in acinetobacter baumannii has made an important challenge in the treatment of infections caused by this organism. the ability of carbapenemase production is one of the main mechanisms for the emergence of mdr and/or xdr in a. baumannii. the aim of this study was to detect carbapenemase producer a. baumannii. in t...
Dear Editor, Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe infections and is associated with nosocomial outbreaks worldwide [1,2]. Carbapenems are the agents of choice to treat these infections, but multidrug-resistant isolates are being reported in hospitals worldwide [1]. One of the most important mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems is the production of carba...
