Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Pseudomonas viridiflava strain CDRTc14 a pectinolytic bacterium showing herbicidal activity, isolated from the root of Lepidium draba L. growing as a weed in an Austrian vineyard. The availability of this genome sequence allows us to investigate the genetic basis of plant-microbe interactions.

BACKGROUND Migraine is one of the most common and debilitating neurological problems. Although numerous preventive drugs are used to treat migraine, their complications are unavoidable. Application of herbal medicine, especially well-known medicinal plants, to treatment of chronic diseases, like migraine, could be effective. Coriandrum sativum L. (C. sativum) fruit is one of the most commonly p...

Reactive sulfur species from garlic have long been renowned for their health benefits and antimicrobial properties. In agriculture the subject matter is now gathering momentum in the search for new bio-pesticides to addressing emerging environmental concerns and tighter restrictions on the use of many conventional chemical pesticides. Although the precise modes of action of these garlic-derived...

Lectins are present in microorganisms, plants and animals and have attracted great interest due to their varied physiological roles in cell agglutination, anti-tumour, immunomodulatory, antifungal and antiviral effects. Legume lectins are important to the pharmaceuticals but they are produced in low amounts in the plant seeds. Moreover, the genes controlling these proteins are conditionally act...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of alcoholic extract of Allium sativum and Piper longum on the muscular activity of a parasitic amphistome, Gigantocotyle explanatum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Amphistomes were isometrically mounted to record the spontaneous muscular activity by using Chart 4 software program (Power Lab, AD Instruments, Australia) and to examine the effects of cumulative doses...

A total of 122 accessions of different wild and cultivated Pisum sp. were analysed using retrotransposon-based insertion polymorphisms (RBIP) markers. The Pisum materials included wild and cultivated (landraces and cultivars) materials from the World core collection of the John Innes Centre (JI) representing all generally recognized Pisum taxa, landraces materials from the Spanish core collecti...

This study was aimed to provide the pharmacological basis for the medicinal use of Lepidium sativum in diarrhea using in vivo and in vitro assays. The seed extract of Lepidium sativum (Ls.Cr) at 100 and 300 mg/kg inhibited castor oil-induced diarrhea in rats. In isolated rat ileum, Ls.Cr (0.01-5 mg/mL) reversed carbachol (CCh, 1 µM) and K(+) (80 mM)-induced contractions with higher potency agai...

Competition is a key feature that structures the composition of plant communities. A growing body of evidence is showing that the presence of neighbours, especially belowground neighbours, induces varied morphological responses in plants. However, in many species, it is not known whether neighbour identity also influences plant morphological responses such as biomass allocation patterns. To ass...

The aims of this study are to determine the chemical composition of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. and Coriandrum sativum L. essential oils, to evaluate their cytotoxic effects in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells, to investigate whether an alteration of adenylate cyclase 1 (ADCY1) and of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) expression can take part in the molecular mechanisms of the essen...
