BACKGROUND Pancreatic cancer has significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Good prognosis relies on an early diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to develop techniques for identifying cancer biomarkers in the serum of patients with pancreatic cancer. METHODS Serum samples from five individuals with pancreatic cancer and five individuals without cancer were compared. Highly abundant s...

A new species of cloud forest butterfly, Eretris julieta n. sp. is described from a region of south-central Bolivia known as the Elbow of the Andes. It is the southernmost known representative of the genus, hitherto known only from a restricted area of interandean valleys in the department of Santa Cruz. Its affinities with other congeners are evaluated.

Results JDM was diagnosed in 32 patients (16 girls and 16 boys) with mean age at the disease onset 8.8 years (boys: 7.5 years, girls: 10.2 years). Average period between disease onset and diagnosis was 9.8 months. Major clinical signs at the first visit were muscle weakness and/or pain (78% patients) and heliotrope rash (65% patients). Diagnosis was confirmed with laboratory findings (avarage C...

Using a proteomic approach, we have previously shown that exposure to different concentrations of cisplatin during a 12-h period can lead to changes in nuclear protein expression and alternative splicing in HeLa cells. To further shed light on the DNA damage response (DDR) induced by cisplatin, we examined the nuclear proteome profiles of HeLa cells treated with 5μM cisplatin for different time...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor, and chronic infection with hepatitis B virus is one of its major risk factors. To identify the proteins involved in HCC carcinogenesis, we used two-dimensional fluorescence DIGE to study the differentially expressed proteins in tumor and adjacent nontumor tissue samples. Samples from 12 hepatitis B virus-associated HCC patients were an...

Chromobacterium violaceum is a gram-negative betaproteobacterium that has been isolated from various Brazilian ecosystems. Its genome contains the cyn operon, which gives it the ability to metabolize highly toxic cyanate into ammonium and carbon dioxide. We used a proteomics approach to investigate the effects of cyanate on the metabolism of this bacterium. The proteome of cells grown with and ...

drought and salinity stress are adverse environmental factors that affect crop growth and yield. abiotic stress cause some reaction in plants such as change in gene expression, cell metabolism, growth and yield. moreover, stress condition resulted in increase of reactive oxygen species and disturbe macromolecules such as proteins, fatty acids, nucleic acid and pigments. in order to evaluate sal...

Magnaporthe oryzae is an important model system in studies of plant pathogenic fungi, and nitrogen is a key nutrient source affecting microbial growth and development. In order to understand how nitrogen stress causes changes in mycelial proteins, we analyzed differentially expressed mycelial proteins from the M. oryzae virulent strain CH-63 using two-dimensional electrophoresis and mass spectr...

To elucidate molecular responses of shrimp hemocytes to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was applied to investigate differentially expressed proteins in hemocytes of Chinese shrimp (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) at 24 h post infection (hpi). Approximately 580 protein spots were detected in hemocytes of healthy and WSSV-infected shrimps. Quantitative in...
