A series of pyrimido[4,5-b]quinolines (5-deazaflavines), were synthesized by microwave assisted intramolecular cyclization. The N⁴-substituted-2,4-diamino-6-chloro-pyrimidine-5-carbaldehydes, were prepared by selective monoamination of 2-amino-4,6-dichloropyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde with aliphatic and aromatic amines.

The title compound, CH(5)N(6) (+)·Cl(-), crystallized with two indepedent 1,5-diamino-tetra-zolium cations and two independent chloride anions in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, there are a number of N-H⋯Cl hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, which generate a three-dimensional network.

The syntheses in good yields of some new difunctionalized 1,8-naphthyridines 4, 6, 8 and 9 and a novel triethylene glycol ether-linked dinaphthyridine, 10a, along with the mononaphthyridine-linked ether alcohol 10b are described. An improved and milder method for the synthesis of 2,7-diamino-1,8-naphthyridine (14) is also reported.

A new route to luminescent derivatives of androgenic steroids containing a ketone group in the 3- or 17-position has been developed. Reaction with the fac-Re(CO)(3)Cl complex of 3,3'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (complex 1) afforded a cyclic aminal product with different steroids. The rate of reaction and yield varies according to the conjugation or steric hindrance around the ketone group.
