Visible afterglow counterparts have now been detected for two GRBs (970228 and 970508) but are absent, with Lopt/Lγ ratios at least two orders of magnitude lower, for other GRBs, e.g., 970828. The causes of this variation are unknown. Any correspondence which could be discovered between the γ-ray properties of a GRB and its Lopt/Lγ would be useful, both in determining the GRB mechanisms, and in...

We report optical observations of the GRB 980329 error box which represent the second earliest detection of the GRB 980329 optical transient. We determine R = 23.7 ± 0.5 mag on 29.89 March, which is consistent with R = 23.6 ± 0.2 mag as reported by Palazzi et al. (1998) on 29.99 March. Based on extrapolations of the light curve we claim that the R-band magnitude of the GRB 980329 host galaxy sh...

GRB afterglows close to their peak intensity are among the brightest sources in the sky. We discuss how GRB optical-to-X-ray afterglows can be used as probes of the metal enrichment of the interstellar matter in the GRB host galaxies and of the heating history of the intergalactic matter in filaments and outskirts of clusters of galaxies along the line of sight. The key points of the proposed o...

The observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provide constraints on the nature of these unique astrophysical sources. GRB 130427A had the largest fluence, highest-energy photon (95 GeV), longest γ-ray duration (20 hours), and one of the largest isotropic energy releases ever observed from a GRB....

Radio observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows provide both complementary and unique diagnostics of the afterglow physics and environment of the burst. Here we concentrate on three unique aspects of GRB energetics and environments afforded by radio and submillimeter observations: the non-relativistic evolution of the fireball, the density profile of the circumburst medium, and the study...

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is widely considered as a major cause of human skin photoaging and skin cancer. Granzyme B (GrB) and perforin (PFN) are two proteins contained in granules and implicated in one of the mechanisms by which cytotoxic lymphocytes and natural killer cells exert their cytotoxicity against virus-infected, alloreactive, or transformed cells. The distribution of G...

We examine the practice of deriving interstellar medium (ISM) abundances from low-resolution spectroscopy of GRB afterglows. We argue that the multi-ion single-component curve-of-growth analysis technique systematically underestimates the column densities of the metal-line profiles commonly observed for GRB. This systematic underestimate is accentuated by the fact that many GRB line-profiles (e...

Granzyme B-expressing (GrB+) B cells are thought to contribute to immune dysfunctions in HIV patients, but so far their exact role is unknown. This report demonstrates for the first time the existence of GrB+ B cells in SIV-infected rhesus macaques, which represent the most commonly used nonhuman primate model for HIV research. Similar to HIV patients, we found significantly higher frequencies ...

Patients with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) exhibit immune hyper-activation as a consequence of genetic defects in secretory granule proteins of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and natural killer (NK) cells. Murine models of HLH demonstrate significant activation of CTL as central to the disease pathogenesis, but evaluation of CTL and NK activation in children with HLH or inflammatory ...

We present BV RI observations of the optical counterpart to the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) 990510 obtained with the Las Campanas 1.0-m telescope between 15 and 48 hours after the burst. The temporal analysis of the data indicates steepening decay, independent of wavelength, approaching asymptotically t −0.76±0.01 at early times (t ≪ 1 day) and t −2.40±0.02 at late times, with the break time at t 0 =...
