By adopting a ligand-based solid solution approach, the sulphonic acid functional group can be successfully incorporated into a porous coordination polymer with UiO-66 structure type. Zr(6)O(4)(OH)(4)(BDC-SO(3)H)(1.1)(BDC)(4.9) possesses enhanced heat of adsorption for carbon dioxide and acetone compared to Zr(6)O(4)(OH)(4)(BDC)(6).

The exchange of the monocarboxylate ligand of the zirconium methacrylate oxocluster Zr(6)O(4)(OH)(4)(OMc)(12) (OMc = CH(2)=CH(CH(3))COO) with dicarboxylic acids (trans,trans muconic acid and terephthalic acid) leads to porous zirconium dicarboxylates exhibiting the UiO-66 architecture; the mild reaction conditions allow the control of their particle size.

A series of styrene/butadiene polymers were combined with up to 90 wt% UiO-66 to form mixed-matrix membranes with varying physical properties. Notably, polystyrene-block-polybutadiene (SBS) membranes retained much of the processability and flexibility of the native polymer component and the porosity, chemical tunability, and adsorption of the native MOF.
