The first synthetic attempt commencing from an eight-membered ring to approach the [5.3.1] bicyclic core of vinigrol has demonstrated the feasibility of using the conformational bias of the cyclooctane-ring system to realize highly diastereoselective reactions. The synthetic potential of the newly disclosed access to in/out isomerism may stimulate broader interests.

A concise and scalable synthesis of a cis-fused bicyclo[5.3.0]decane ring system has been developed for the total synthesis of echinopines. The core of the natural products was constructed efficiently through an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and ring contraction strategy.

In the title compound, C(31)H(25)ClO(3), the central ring of the xanthene core shows a shallow boat conformation, while the outer six-membered rings display envelope conformations. The dihedral angle between the outer aromatic rings is 88.1 (3)° and the dihedral angles between the chloro-benzene ring and the two phenyl rings are 69.5 (2) and 69.6 (2)°.
