The results of ab initio calculation of E1 amplitudes, lifetimes, and polarizabilities for several low-lying levels of ytterbium are reported. The effective Hamiltonian for the valence electrons Heff has been constructed in the frame of CI+MBPT method and solutions of many electron equation HeffΦn = EnΦn are found. Laser operation was achieved in microstructured channel waveguides of KY(WO4)2:Gd, Lu, Yb, resulting in a threshold of only 5 mW, a slope efficiency of 62% versus launched pump power, and 76 mW output power. OCIS codes: (140.3615) Lasers, Ytterbium; (230.7380) Waveguides, channeled

Several unusual complexes of ytterbium(ii) stabilised by coordination to mixed O4X2-donor macrocyclic ligands (X = O, NH, S or Se) are described. Distorted 8-coordination is evident from the crystal structure of the neutral [YbI2([18]aneO4Se2)], forming the first reported example of Yb(ii)-selenoether coordination.

Polymerization of racemic lactide initiated by divalent ytterbium complexes supported by either dimethylamino-amino bis(phenolate) or methoxy-amino bis(phenolate) ligands proceeds rapidly at room temperature in a living fashion to give heterotactic polylactide with the racemic enchainment of monomer units P(r) ranging from 0.97-0.99.

We report on the realization of a stable mixture of ultracold lithium and ytterbium atoms confined in a far-off-resonance optical dipole trap. We observe sympathetic cooling of 6Li by 174Yb and extract the s-wave scattering length magnitude |a(6Li-174Yb)|=(13±3)a0 from the rate of interspecies thermalization. Using forced evaporative cooling of 174Yb, we achieve reduction of the 6Li temperature...

We report the photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms in an optical trap. We observed more than 90 photoassociation resonances of vibrational levels in the (1)Sigma(+)(u) state, including 80 consecutive series, up to 490 GHz detuning with respect to the atomic resonance. From the resonance frequencies we derived the atomic radiative lifetime of the (6s6p) 1P1 state to be 5...

Many schemes for implementing quantum information processing require that the atomic states used have a nonzero magnetic moment; however, such magnetically sensitive states of an atom are vulnerable to decoherence due to fluctuating magnetic fields. Dressing an atom with external fields is a powerful method of reducing such decoherence [N. Timoney et al., Nature (London) 476, 185 (2011)]. We in...

Macrodefect-free single crystals of Yb-doped KGd(PO(3)), a noncentrosymmetric laser host which possesses second-order nonlinear susceptibility, were grown using the top seeded solution growth slow-cooling (TSSG-SC) technique, reaching a maximum ytterbium concentration in the crystal of approximately 3.2x10(20) at/cm(3). In order to evaluate the potential for self-frequency doubling, the dispers...

Lasing of Yb3+ in a disordered single crystal host, NaGd(WO4)2, is reported. Pump efficiencies as high as 20% and slope efficiencies as high as 30% are achieved for both sigma- and pi-polarizations with Ti:sapphire laser pumping. The emission of Yb:NaGd(WO4)2 is centered near 1030 nm. Tunability between 1016 and 1049 nm is obtained with a Lyot filter.

We present an experimental study of the lattice-induced light shifts on the (1)S(0) --> (3)P(0) optical clock transition (nu(clock) approximately 518 THz) in neutral ytterbium. The "magic" frequency nu(magic) for the 174Yb isotope was determined to be 394 799 475(35) MHz, which leads to a first order light shift uncertainty of 0.38 Hz. We also investigated the hyperpolarizability shifts due to ...
