Universités Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6) et Denis Diderot (Paris 7); Unité associée au CNRS D0 280. Abstract: the scalar composite representations of the electroweak symmetry group of the Standard Model are exhibited in the case of two generations of quarks. The link between 'strong' and 'electroweak' eigenstates is investigated, showing that the quark content commonly attributed to pseudosc...

An azimuthal dependence of pions produced in polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering, γp → πX, has been recently observed and might be related to the so-called Collins effect. We discuss in details, for a general spin configuration of the nucleon, the kinematics of the process and methods of extracting information on the fragmentation properties of a polarized quark. Assuming that the observed azim...

We analyse the phenomenological viability of heterotic Z3 orbifolds with two Wilson lines, which naturally predict three supersymmetric families of matter and Higgs fields. Given that these models can accommodate realistic scenarios for the quark sector avoiding potentially dangerous flavour-changing neutral currents, we now address the leptonic sector, finding that viable orbifold configuratio...

The chiral and heavy quark symmetries of QCD are reviewed. These symmetries are used to predict some low–momentum properties of hadrons containing a single heavy quark. ⋆ Work supported in part by the U.S. Dept. of Energy under Grant no. DE-FG03-92-ER 40701.

We report on new results of the spin dependent structure functions g 1 and h 1 of the nucleon. An attempt is made to convert the moments, which is what one computes on the lattice, to quark distribution functions.

A new classification approach was developed to improve the noninvasive diagnosis of brain tumors. Within this approach, information is extracted from magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy data, from which the relative location and distribution of selected tumor classes in feature space can be calculated. This relative location and distribution is used to select the best information extrac...

Top quark production at the Fermilab Tevatron probes very high mass scales, O(500 GeV ), and therefore is sensitive to new physics at this scale. Hence, it is important that we studied this process with high precision and compare the results with the standard model predictions. Also the top quark mass along with the W-boson mass can be used as an indirect measurement of the Higgs boson mass or ...

We study soft-gluon radiation for heavy quark production in charged-current Deep Inelastic Scattering processes. We resum large-x contributions to the MS coefficient function to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and present results for charm quark structure functions for several values of the ratio mc/Q. The effect of soft resummation turns out to be visible, especially at small Q, and the r...

We make a quenched lattice simulation of hadron spectroscopy at β = 6.2 with the Wilson action non-perturbatively improved. With respect to the unimproved case, the estimate of the lattice spacing is less influenced by the choice of input hadron masses. We study also the effects of using an improved quark mass in the fits to the dependence of hadron masses upon quark masses. CERN-TH/97-321 Nove...
