The prevalence of HFMD as well as the causative agents was unknown in peninsular Malaysia prior to May 1997. From May 1997 to June 2001, 585 patients suspected to have enterovirus infections, with 467 patients clinically diagnosed as having HFMD, were investigated in the diagnostic virology unit of the University Malaya Medical Centre. Data from this study showed that HFMD is endemic in Malaysi...

The possibility that the occurrence of virus in stools may form a link in the chain of events operating in the spread of poliomyelitis makes it important to know how long virus is excreted. Little is known of the persistence of virus in stools beyond the first four weeks of the disease. The -literature up to 1940 has been summarized by Trask, Paul, and Vignec (2, 3). These surveys indicate that...

BACKGROUND Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a sight threatening ocular infection often requiring a specific and prompt laboratory diagnosis. Isolation of Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) in culture provides the most reliable and specific method and is considered as the "Gold Standard" in the laboratory diagnosis of HSK in spite of its low sensitivity. Using "cell lines of corneal origin" for virus...

An Oropouche virus strain was isolated from a novel host (Callithrix sp.) in Arinos, Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. The virus was identified by complement fixation test and confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Phylogenetic analysis identified this strain as a genotype III isolate previously recognized only in Panama.

BACKGROUND Enteroviruses include over 100 serotypes and usually cause self-limited infections with non-specific symptoms in children, with the exceptions of polioviruses and enterovirus 71 which frequently cause neurologic complications. Therefore, early detection and serotyping of enteroviruses are critical in clinical management and disease surveillance. Traditional methods for detection and ...

Composting has been used for disposal of poultry carcasses and manure following outbreaks caused by avian influenza virus (AIV) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV), but methods are needed to test for survival of the viruses in compost to ensure biosecurity. Methods developed in the present study include extracting viruses from compost and purifying viral RNA. The extracted viruses were detected b...

The emergence of corona virus (COVID-19) has create a great public concern as the outbreak is still ongoing and government are taking actions such as holiday extension, travel restriction, temporary closure of public work place, borders, schools, quarantine/isolation, social distancing and so on. To mitigate the spread, we proposed and analyzed a stochastic model for the continue spread of coro...

OBJECTIVE Following the isolation of a Marseillevirus from the stool of a healthy young Senegalese and a Mimivirus from a Tunisian patient with pneumonia, we attempted to isolate other giant viruses of amoebae from a large human stool collection. METHODS During the period 2010-2011, a total of 1,605 stool samples, including 115 from Tunisian patients with pneumonia, were cultured on amoebae. ...

This series of papers is concerned with the isolation of poliomyelitis virus in the human disease. In them the attempt has been made to compare the ease or difficulty with which the virus may be isolated from several different anatomical sites in man, during and after acquisition of the disease, or exposure to it. In papers I and II (1) virus tests on oropharyngeal swabs and washings are compar...

Zika virus (ZIKV) can be sexually transmitted and replicative particles were first detected in a semen sample from a patient during the 2013-14 French Polynesia outbreak. Here we describe the virus isolation from semen of a patient returning to Italy from Brazil.
