BACKGROUND Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a popular minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. Surgical treatment, featuring junctional ligation and inversion stripping, has shown excellent clinical and cost effectiveness. The clinical effectiveness of both treatments was compared within a randomized trial. METHODS Some 280 patients were randomized equally into groups receiving eit...

Varicose vein surgery is one of the commonest surgeries performed in the Western world. Utilisation of a plastic stripper and olive or a perforation/inversion metallic stripper has been used to remove the great saphenous vein in the thigh. We describe a non-traumatic technique for removal of the great saphenous vein that has minimal complications.

BACKGROUND Endovenous laser ablation is one of the most accepted treatment options for insufficient great and small saphenous veins. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of the radial fiber (ELVeS-radial kit™) for the 1470 nm diode laser in a 1-year follow-up. METHODS A total of 308 lower limbs with primary insufficiency of great and small saphenous veins...

A patient-specific finite-element (FE) model of the human leg is developed to model the stress distribution in and around a vein wall in order to determine the biomechanical response of varicose veins to compression treatment. The aim is to investigate the relationship between the local pressure on the soft tissues induced by wearing the compression garment and the development and evolution of ...

In order to study the structural changes in the intimal layer of varicose veins, we prospectively collected a total of 23 vein specimens from both the normal proximal thigh long saphenous (LSV) in 3 young trauma patients and from the unstripped proximal LSV near the sapheno-femoral junction and the distal calf blowouts in 10 primary varicose veins patients. Paraffin sections stained with hemato...

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is the most common vascular disease and represents a significant health care problem in the United States. Reflux of the great saphenous vein is the most common cause of this condition, whose symptoms include varicose veins, leg swelling, skin discoloration, and ulceration. The traditional treatment of this condition is saphenofemoral ligation with stripping o...
