GRASP proteins associate with the Golgi apparatus and have been implicated in the stacking of Golgi cisternae, vesicle tethering, and mitotic progression, but their specific functions are unclear. In this issue, Kinseth et al. (2007) show unexpectedly that a GRASP homolog is required for an unconventional secretory pathway that bypasses the usual route for Golgi-dependent membrane traffic.

Resonating valence bond states in a doped Mott insulator was proposed to explain superconductivity in cuprates in January 1987 by Anderson. A challenging task then was proving existence of this unconventional mechanism and a wealth of possibilities, with a rigor acceptable in standard condensed matter physics, in a microscopic theory and develop suitable many body techniques. Shortly, a paper...

Computer music is a truly interdisciplinary field; practitioners are well known for experimenting with new and developing technologies from a wide span of disciplines. Such experimentation is a tradition that stems back to the genesis of computer music, where a mathematician with a musical background programmed an early computer in the early 1950s to play a tune. The area of computer music has ...

An evolving computation is one whose characteristics vary during its execution. These variations have many di erent origins and can manifest themselves in several ways. Thus, for example, the parameters of a computation, such as the data it uses, may vary with time independently of the computational environment in which the computation is carried out. Alternatively, it may be that the data inte...

Unconventional myosins are proteins that bind actin filaments in an ATP-regulated manner. Because of their association with membranes, they have traditionally been viewed as motors that function primarily to transport membranous organelles along actin filaments. Recently, however, a wealth of roles for myosins that are not obviously related to organelle transport have been uncovered, including ...

My recent work has uncovered at least three general unconventional computational paradigms within which parallel algorithms lead to a superlinear improvement in performance (that is, speed and quality) with respect to their sequential counterparts. These paradigms, described in some detail below, are: computing in real time, computing within the bounds of laws of nature, and computing subject t...

Butterflies and stomatopods are certainly outliers in their unconventional colour sense and despite some similarities at first glance, in fact sample the world of colour very differently. In one way, butterflies are relatively conventional, possessing either tri-or tetrachromatic colour vision, then just adding one or several task-specific sub-mechanisms onto this. It is the stomatopods so far ...

This paper investigates a variety of unconventional quantum computation devices , including fermionic quantum computers and computers that exploit nonlinear quantum mechanics. It is shown that unconventional quantum computing devices can in principle compute some quantities more rapidly than 'conventional' quantum computers. Computers are physical: what they can and cannot do is determined by t...
