Over the years, police have become a central component of international peace- and statebuilding operations. However, predominantly trained socialized as members domestic service, officers enter global arena only – if ever temporarily: their deployment is often merely an interlude to regular service. Pre-deployment training for missions therefore deemed vital success. When abroad, oftentimes fi...

Model-driven simulation can make the design and delivery of instruction more efficient and effective. We describe two computational models that support both the design and delivery of instruction. BEST (the Benchmarked Experiential System for Training) can guide experts through the space of domain problems during the knowledge engineering phase of instructional design; it can guide trainees thr...

| Monostrategy classiication systems are very limited in the type of knowledge they can use for decision making. On the other hand, potentially better results are achievable using multistrategy systems that integrate two or more types of knowledge representation and/or multiple inference underlying a decision process. In this paper a decision tree and a neural network technique for competitive ...

A mixture of local experts consists of a set of specialized models each of which is responsible for a particular local region of input space. Many algorithms in this class, for example M5 model tree, are sub-optimal (greedy). An algorithm for building optimal local mixtures of regression experts is proposed, and compared to MLP ANN on a number of cases.

OBJECTIVE The authors describe the evolution of a novel national training program to develop minority faculty for mental health services research careers. Recruiting, training, and sustaining minority health professionals for academic research careers in mental health services research have proven challenging. METHOD Over the past 8 years the authors developed NIMH-funded programs to educate,...

In the aftermath of the war in Bosnia Herzegovina, a task group of Swedish experts organised and supported training of community psychiatry and social work as part of the mental health reform. Among the basic principles of the programme were a close cooperation with the Ministry of Health, personal continuity, exchange of knowledge and long term engagement. With the support of the programme, co...

Increasing awareness of the issue of deforestation and degradation in the tropics has resulted in efforts to monitor forest resources in tropical countries. Advances in satellite-based remote sensing and ground-based technologies have allowed for monitoring of forests with high spatial, temporal and thematic detail. Despite these advances, there is a need to engage communities in monitoring act...

Social benefit organizations face staggering challenges in their efforts to improve the lives of poor people, particularly in the developing world. Programs that offer management training and financial know-how to local leaders working in fields such as health, education, environmental protection, and economic development fill a widely recognized need for these organizations and their supporter...

This paper introduces a new classification problem in the context of human computation. Given training data annotated by m human experts s.t. for each training instance the true class is provided, the task is to estimate the true class of a new test instance. To solve the problem we propose to apply a wellknown ensemble approach, namely the stacked-generalization approach. The key idea is to vi...
