OBJECTIVE For optimal imaging in first-pass radionuclide angiography (FPRNA) studies, 1.11 GBq (30 mCi) 99mTc-sestamibi doses are drawn up in volumes of 0.1-0.3 mL. A single bolus injection of this small volume is important to obtain accurate time-activity curves. Because of the small volume and concentrated radioactivity, it is undesirable for study effectiveness and image quality to have a si...
INTRODUCTION Police officers are at an elevated risk for needle-stick injuries (NSI), which pose a serious and costly occupational health risk for HIV and viral hepatitis. However, research on NSIs among police officers is limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the legality of syringe possession in Mexico, half of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Tijuana report extraj...
The surgeon who requests the pathological laboratory to determine a patient's blood clotting time expects a result which will indicate if surgery might be dangerous. If he follows the teaching of Cummine and Lyons (1948) or of Dutton (1954) he may wish to use the test to anticipate thromboembolic episodes. The physician may request the test for various reasons. It is, accordingly, very importan...
Plasma concentrations of lignocaine and the clearance rates of technetium-99m were compared in 10 healthy volunteers after injection with a gas-powered jet system and a needle and syringe. The dosage was highly accurate with jet injection. Bioavailability was comparable for both methods.
Removal of particulate materials from the retinal surface is somewhat difficult during small gauge vitrectomy. Simple injection of balanced salt solution into the vitreous cavity in a controlled manner using a connector tubing between the syringe and needle can produce enough turbulence to float the deposited material and remove it.
BACKGROUND Pharmacists' role in harm reduction is expanding in many states, yet there are limited data on pharmacists' willingness to participate in harm reduction activities. This study assessed community pharmacists' willingness to participate in one harm reduction initiative: syringe/needle exchange. METHODS In 2015, all Kentucky pharmacists with active licenses were emailed a survey that ...
Culturing fermentative microorganisms often requires that accumulating carbon dioxide be vented during growth. Preventing the release of such by-products usually causes inhibition of the organism, and this can then lead to a decreased yield of fermentation products such as organic acids and ethanol. It is common to release pressure with a needle placed through a septum covering the fermentation...
Abstract Background Comparison between the Fine Needle Non-Aspiration Cytology (FNNAC) and Aspiration (FNAC) in acquiring ultrasound-guided fine needle cytology (FNC) samples from solid thyroid nodules to determine better technique, hence improving sample quality aiming decrease number of unnecessary thyroidectomy operations. Results Prospective study showed statistically significant increase c...
The use of injection devices to administer intravenous or subcutaneous medications is common practice throughout a variety of health care settings. Studies suggest that one-half of all harmful medication errors originate during drug administration; of those errors, about two-thirds involve injectables. Therefore, injection device management is pivotal to safe administration of medications. In t...
