The concept of radar satellite constellations, or clusters, for SAR and other radar modes has been proposed and is currently under research. These systems are composed of multiple, formation-flying satellites with each satellite having its own, coherent receiver. Increased swathwidth compared to that of traditional SAR is attainable by processing the spatial data obtained from multiple satellit...

A statistical image model is proposed for segmenting polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data into regions of homogeneous and similar polarimetric backscatter characteristics. A model for the conditional distribution of the polarimetric complex data is combined with a Markov random field representation for the distribution of the region labels to obtain the posterior distribution. Optim...

This paper considers the problem of clutter segmentation in fully polarimetric, high resolution, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The goal of segmentation is to partition an image into regions of homogeneous terrain types (grass regions, tree regions, roads, etc.). Three approaches to segmentation are examined: (1) the optimal polarimetric classifier, (2) the optimal normalized polarimet...

This paper presents a survey of recent research on sparsity-driven synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. In particular, it reviews (i) analysis and synthesis-based sparse signal representation formulations for SAR image formation together with the associated imaging results; (ii) sparsity-based methods for wide-angle SAR imaging and anisotropy characterization; (iii) sparsity-based methods fo...

The Digital Beamforming Synthetic Aperture Radar (DBSAR) is a state-of-the-art radar system developed at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center for the development and implementation of digital beamforming radar techniques. DBSAR was recently upgraded to polarimetric operation in order to enhance its capability as a science instrument. Two polarimetric approaches were carried out which will be demons...

Over the past 10 years, synthetic aperture radars (SAR) have frequently detected pronounced signatures of nonlinear, coastal internal waves 1-6 that are produced by the interaction of short-wavelength surface waves with internal wave-induced surface currents. A qualitative representation of the signature generation process is shown in Fig. 1 for a group of nonlinear internal waves. At the leadi...

This paper outlines basic principle of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Matched filter approaches for processing the received data and pulse compression technique are presented. Besides the SAR radar equation, the linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and matched filter response are also discussed. Finally the system design consideration of various parameters and aspects are also highlighted.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) currently has problems in the processing that lead to smearing of the image. We have developed a new method of processing the data using maximum likelihood theory that will remove the smearing leading to superior images. The goal of this project was to write a MATLAB program to simulate a SAR system to test the new processing method.

Non-quadratic regularization based image formation is a recently proposed framework for feature-enhanced radar imaging. Specific image formation techniques in this framework have so far focused on enhancing one type of feature, such as strong point scatterers, or smooth regions. However, many scenes contain a number of such features. We develop an image formation technique that simultaneously e...

This paper presents numeric simulations related to sensing through the wall radar technologies. Our computational approaches include the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) algorithm and the shooting and bouncing ray technique (Xpatch). We analyze the radar signatures of the human body and other objects, in free-space and inside a room. The emphasis is on radar scattering phenomenology, with r...
