Evolution of the direct repeat region in Mycobacterium tuberculosis has created unique spoligotype signatures specifically associated with IS6110-defined strain families. Spoligotyping signatures may enable the analysis of the strain population structure in different settings and will enable the rapid identification of strain families that acquire drug resistance or escape protective immunity i...
The genetic compositions of 71 isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains from Poland were determined by spoligotyping. Nearly 80% of the isolates belonged to either the T or the Haarlem family. The genotypic diversity was largely due to variation within those families. The scarcity of imported genotypes suggested that the M. tuberculosis population studied has an endemic nature.
We describe a severely immunosuppressed HIV-1-positive man in whom immune restoration disease associated with pulmonary infection caused by Mycobacterium microti developed after antiretroviral treatment. The diagnosis was made by using convenient spoligotyping techniques, but invasive investigations were required to exclude a tumor.
Mycobacterium bovis is best identified by screening those isolates of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex that have any pyrazinamide (PZA) resistance, using a confirmatory test such as spoligotyping, biochemical testing, or genomic deletion analysis. The sensitivity for detection of M. bovis is lowered to 82% when only PZA-monoresistant isolates are screened.
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major public health concerns in Assam, a remote state located in the northeastern (NE) region of India. The present study was undertaken to explore the circulating genotypes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in this region. A total of 189 MTBC strains were collected from smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases from different designated microscopy c...
BACKGROUND In sub-Saharan Africa, bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a potential hazard for animals and humans health. The goal of this study was to improve our understanding of bTB epidemiology in Burkina Faso and especially Mycobacterium bovis transmission within and between the bovine and human populations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Twenty six M. bovis strains were isolated from 101 cattle ...
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious problem in China. While there have been some studies on the nationwide genotyping of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), there has been little detailed research in Beijing, the capital of China, which has a huge population. Here, M. tuberculosis clinical strains collected in Beijing during 2009 were genotyped by classical methods. METHODOLOG...
BACKGROUND Spacer oligonucleotide typing (spoligotyping), a widely used, classical genotyping method for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), is a PCR-based dot-blot hybridization technique to detect the genetic diversity of the direct repeat (DR) region. Of the seven major MTBC lineages in the world, lineage 1 (Indo-Oceanic) mostly corresponds to the East African-Indian (EAI) spoligotype...
