Understanding how stimuli and synaptic connectivity influence the statistics of spike patterns in neural networks is a central question in computational neuroscience. The maximum-entropy approach has been successfully used to characterize the statistical response of simultaneously recorded spiking neurons responding to stimuli. However, in spite of good performance in terms of prediction, the f...

We employ an efficient method using Bayesian and linear classifiers for analyzing the dynamics of information in high-dimensional states of generic cortical microcircuit models. It is shown that such recurrent circuits of spiking neurons have an inherent capability to carry out rapid computations on complex spike patterns, merging information contained in the order of spike arrival with previou...

Neural models that simulate single spike trains can help us understand the basic principles of neural coding in vision. Keat et al. (2001) develop a hybrid model that combines spatiotemporal filtering with nonlinear spike generation. The model does a good job of predicting the responses of single retinal ganglion cells and thalamic relay neurons.

Many experiments in neuroscience have compared the strength of association between neural spike trains and rhythms present in local field potential (LFP) recordings. The measure employed in these comparisons, "spike-field coherence", is a frequency dependent measure of linear association, and is shown to depend on overall neural activity (Lepage et al., 2011). Dependence upon overall neural act...

Rhythmic oscillations of up to 600 Hz in grouped neurons frequently occur in the brains of animals. These high-frequency oscillations can be sustained in calcium-free conditions and may be blocked by gap junction blockers, implying a key role for electrical synapses in oscillation generation. Mathematical theories have been developed to demonstrate oscillations mediated by electrical synapses w...

Absence seizures are transient episodes of impaired consciousness accompanied by 3-4 Hz spike-wave discharge on electroencephalography (EEG). Human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated widespread cortical decreases in the blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal that may play an important role in the pathophysiology of these seizures. Animal models could prov...

In cortical neurones, analogue dendritic potentials are thought to be encoded into patterns of digital spikes. According to this view, neuronal codes and computations are based on the temporal patterns of spikes: spike times, bursts or spike rates. Recently, we proposed an 'action potential waveform code' for cortical pyramidal neurones in which the spike shape carries information. Broader soma...

The neural mechanisms that enable recognition of spiking patterns in the brain are currently unknown. This is especially relevant in sensory systems, in which the brain has to detect such patterns and recognize relevant stimuli by processing peripheral inputs; in particular, it is unclear how sensory systems can recognize time-varying stimuli by processing spiking activity. Because auditory sti...

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) respond to spatiotemporal patterns falling on photoreceptors by firing spike trains with an exquisitely precise temporal structure. Existing models of RGCs are reduced input-output models of light intensity or other features (eg contrast), but contain no biophysical parameters for a single RGC. These models, such as the stochastic integrate and fire (IF) and linear...
