Abstract The efficiency of voloxidation mixed nitride uranium–plutonium spent nuclear fuel (MNUP SNF) for the separation composition from rod cladding and removal 3 H 14 C was estimated. It shown that completeness SNF under optimal conditions is at level 98–99%. residual content tritium in voloxidized does not exceed 0.2% its original sample; radiocarbon removed by 98%.

High-temperature gas reactors rely on TRIstructural-ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel for enhanced fission product retention. Accurate characterization would improve monitoring of efficient usage and accountability. We developed a new neutron multiplicity counter (NMC) based boron coated straw (BCS) detectors used it in coincidence mode 235U assay TRISO fuel. In this work, we demonstrate that high-efficie...

The 250 kW TRIGA Mark II research reactor of the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) has been in operation since 1966. The reactor went critical on 30 May 1966. It is a light water reactor, with solid fuel elements in which the zirconium hydride moderator is homogeneously distributed between enriched uranium. The reactor core consists of about 70 fuel elements, which are arranged in an annular lattice...

The nuclear fuel cycle can be truly closed by supp lementing today’s thermal reactors with fast reactors, which can use as fuel the heavy, fissionable isotopes that accumulate in thermal-reactor fuel. In a fully closed cycle, the waste for disposal consists only of fission products with trace amounts of actinides. Eliminating the transuranics reduces the heat load in the repository, increasing ...

This paper reviews fission safety design principles and approaches for coupling inertial confinement fusion (ICF) to a subcritical fission blanket, in Laser ICF Fission Energy (LIFE) power plants. LIFE power plants use fuel derived from either spent fuel from fission reactors, or from natural uranium or thorium. By using fusion neutrons, LIFE plants can fission a large fraction of the heavy met...
