Beginner’s Mind is the newest work in the ongoing Sonic Improvisation Series. This performance system is a combination of software and hardware designed for real-time sonic exploration. This paper will describe the primary design strategies employed in this system, and discuss key aesthetic concerns.

AUDIO ORIENTEERING is a collaborative performance environment in which physical tokens are used to navigate an invisible sonic landscape. In this paper, I describe the hardware and software used to implement a prototype audio terrain with multiple interaction modes and sonic behaviors mapped onto three-dimensional space.

Centrifugally purified samples of tobacco mosaic virus were subjected to intense sound vibrations of 9,000 cycles per second for 0, 2, 8, 16, 32, and 64 minutes. The viscosity and stream birefringence of the samples decreased with time of sonic treatment, but no chemical changes were found. A fascination for models derived from natural organisation of organisms has a long history of influence in the arts. This paper discusses emergence as a complex behaviour and its manifestations in the sonic domain. We address issues inherent in the use of visual/spatial metaphors for sonic representation and propose an approach based on sound interaction within biological complex systems.

Mutations disrupting primary cilia cause retinal, renal, and cerebellar defects, and misregulated Sonic hedgehog signaling. A new mouse mutant in the TTBK2 kinase fails to make cilia, and shows neural tube and Sonic hedgehog signaling defects.
