Bacillus subilis MB73/2 is a Gram-positive bacterium isolated in Poland from a meadow soil sample. When tested in vitro, the strain shows strong antagonism toward plant pathogens-the soft rot-causing bacteria Dickeya spp. and the crown rot fungus Rhizoctonia solani. Here, we present the genome sequence of MB73/2.
Micro-XAFS and chemical imaging techniques have been widely applied for studies of heterogeneously distributed systems, mostly in hard X-ray (>5 keV) or in soft X-ray (<1.5 keV) energies. The microprobe endstation of the SXRMB (soft X-ray microcharacterization beamline) at the Canadian Light Source is optimized at the medium energy (1.7-5 keV), and it has been recently commissioned and is avail...
Photorhabdus asymbiotica is an emerging bacterial pathogen that causes locally invasive soft tissue and disseminated bacteremic infections in the United States and Australia. Although the source of infection was previously unknown, we report that the bacterium is found in a symbiotic association with an insect-pathogenic soil nematode of the genus Heterorhabditis.
Shield tunnelling is used widely in constructing underground infrastructure in cities due to the ability to limit settlements and damage to existing buildings. However, in an environment with soft overburden and buildings on pile foundations, the tunnel is often designed well below the pile tip level. There are two reasons for doing this: to reduce interaction between tunnelling process and pil...
EPS geofoam can be used to support highway bridge structures without the aid of deep foundations. The development of this technology is important to accelerate construction on soft compressible soil. EPS geofoam allows for the rapid construction of bridge foundations on such soils without the time and cost involved in installing traditional foundations. Because EPS geofoam is an extremely light...
In this paper, a study was carried out in order to estimate settlements and consolidation rates under embankments constructed on Moroccan soft soils. Settlement measurements in several embankments in High Speed Railway project between two Moroccan cities, Tangier and Assilah, were analyzed. The objective of this study is to estimate settlement values and settlement rates, with sufficient prec...
Lecythophora (Coniochaeta) hoffmannii, a soil- and lignocellulose-inhabiting sordariomycete (Ascomycota) that can also live as a facultative tree pathogen causing soft rot, belongs to the family Coniochaetaceae. The strain CBS 245.38 sequenced here was assembled into 869 contigs, has a size of 30.8 Mb, and comprises 10,596 predicted protein-coding genes.
Propagation potentials of stem cuttings of different physiological ages and genotypes of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) were studied at UKM, Malaysia. Stem cuttings of the different physiological ages (hardwood, semi hardwood and soft wood) taken from five selected genotypes of Jatropha were planted in soil media (top soil). Data were collected on the attributes of the stem cuttings and then a...
Original scientific paper The nonlinear creep characteristics of typical clays in the coastal area of Tianjin were studied by consolidated-undrained triaxial creep tests. The tests were performed via the stepwise loading method, and the creep curves of the soft clays under different stress states were obtained from the raw data processed by Chen and Kang’s method. The experiments showed that th...
A trench can act as a barrier to ground vibration and is a potential mitigation measure for low frequency vibration induced by surface railways. However, to be effective at very low frequencies the depth required becomes impractical. Nevertheless, for soil with a layered structure in the top few metres, if a trench can be arranged to cut through the upper, soft layer of soil, it can be effectiv...
