Core-shell particles were formed by deposition of primary silica particles synthesized from sodium silicate solution on functionalized silica core particles (having size of ~0.5 μm) prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylortosilicate. The obtained mesoporous shell has thickness of about 60 nm and consists of primary silica particles with average size of ~21 nm. Scanning electron m...

Contrary to common belief, hollow precipitation tubes form in the absence of silicate if sodium hydroxide solution is injected into solutions of various metal ions. In many cases, the growth speed has a power law dependence on the flow rate. For vanadyl, we observe damped oscillations in the tube height.

HEN ASKED IN 1942 to find a method for the determination of plasma or serum uric acid suitable for inclusion in the War Department’s Technical Manual 8-227, Method,s for Laboratory Technicians, the author believed that the procedure of Kern and Stransky (1) filled the requirements admirably. In this modification, toxic and heat-labile sodium cyanide solution wa replaced by the effective but non...

Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is a promising cementing material for winter construction due to its continuous hydration at sub-zero temperature. In order obtain higher mechanical strength of AAS mortar in construction, the most efficient alkali activator should be selected. Potassium silicate and sodium as alkaline activators possess high rate ordinary showed different properties because cations,...

Alkaline solutions, such as sodium, potassium or lithium silicates, appear to be very promising as healing agents for the development of encapsulated self-healing concretes. However, the evolution of their mechanical and acoustic properties in time has not yet been completely clarified, especially regarding their behavior and related kinetics when they are used in the form of a thin layer in co...

Mineral wools are the most common insulation materials in buildings worldwide. However, mineral wool waste is often considered unrecyclable because of its fibrous nature and low density. In this paper, rock wool (RW) and glass wool (GW) were studied as alkali-activated material precursors without any additional co-binders. Both mineral wools were pulverized by a vibratory disc mill in order to ...
