Environmental exposure to inorganic arsenic compounds has been reported to have serious health effects on humans. Recent studies reported that arsenic targets endothelial cells lining blood vessels, and endothelial cell activation or dysfunction, may underlie the pathogenesis of arsenic-induced diseases and developmental toxicity. It has been reported that microRNAs (miRNAs) may act as an angio...

Arsenic (As) contamination in ground water has affected more than 19 countries. Approximately 36 million people in the Bengal delta alone are exposed to this toxicant via drinking water (>50 microg/l) and are at potential health risk. Chronic ingestion of As via drinking water is associated with occurrence of skin lesions, cancer and other arsenic-induced diseases in West Bengal, India. An in v...

The study was carried out on goats intoxicated with sodium arsenite @ 2 mg /kg body weight for six months. Results indicate that elevated levels of copper and zinc in tissues were found with respect to increase arsenic concentration. Pathological changes were observed in liver, kidney and brain.

Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic severely damages the central nervous system (CNS). Glutamate (GLU) is the major excitatory amino acid and is highly neurotoxic when levels in the synaptic cleft are not properly regulated by a family of Na⁺-dependent excitatory amino acid transporters. Within the cerebellum, the activity of the Bergmann glia Na⁺-dependent GLU/aspartate transporter (GLAST) e...

Most human melanomas express Fas receptor on the cell surface, and treatment with exogenous Fas Ligand (FasL) efficiently induces apoptosis of these cells. In contrast, endogenous surface expression of FasL is suppressed in Fas-positive melanomas. We report here the use of a combination of sodium arsenite, an inhibitor of NF-kappaB activation, and NS398, a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, fo...

Arsenic (As) is a pervasive and ubiquitous environmental toxin that has created worldwide human health problems. However, there are few studies about how organisms detoxify As. Cyanobacteria are capable of both photolithotrophic growth in the light and heterotrophic growth in the dark and are ubiquitous in soils, aquatic systems, and wetlands. In this study, we investigated As biotransformation...

Biological characterization and bioremediation potential of an arsenic hyper-accumulating marine mesophilic bacterium, Aeromonas punctata strain MPT4 isolated from the Ferromanganese ore loading site of marmugao port trust harbour (N15°24’ 28.3” and E 073° 48’ 17.6”), Goa, India is presented in this study. The taxonomic placement of this isolate was done on the basis of biochemical tests(as per...
