There is increasing concern about the reliability of biomedical research, with recent articles suggesting that up to 85% of research funding is wasted. This article argues that an important reason for this is the inappropriate use of molecular techniques, particularly in the field of RNA biomarkers, coupled with a tendency to exaggerate the importance of research findings.

Short sleep duration is associated with elevated body mass index (BMI) and increased energy consumption. The present studies were conducted to determine what role emotional eating and stress might play in these relationships. The first was an exploratory questionnaire study in which sleep quality and duration were measured in conjunction with the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire in 184 women...

Breast cancer incidence has increased during recent decades for reasons that are only partly understood. Prevalence of sleeping difficulties and sleepiness has increased, whereas sleeping duration per night has decreased. We hypothesized that there is an inverse association between sleep duration and breast cancer risk, possibly due to greater overall melatonin production in longer sleepers. Th...

Introduced species represent one of the most serious global threats to biodiversity. In this field-based study, we assessed behavioural responses of brood tending cichlid fish to an invasive predator of their offspring. This was achieved by comparing parental defence responses of the endangered arrow cichlid (Amphilophus zaliosus), a fish species endemic to the crater lake Apoyo in Nicaragua, t...

OBJECTIVES This study examined a cognitive stress-moderation model that posits that the harmful effects of chronic stress are decreased in police officers who perceive high levels of physical fitness. It also determined whether the stress-buffering effect of perceived fitness is influenced by officers' self-reported sleep. METHODS A total of 460 police officers (n=116 females, n=344 males, me...

Abstract Modern wearable devices calculate a numerical metric of sleep quality (sleep feedback), which are intended to allow users monitor and, potentially, improve their sleep. This feedback may have negative impact on pre-sleep cognitive arousal, and subjective sleep, even in healthy sleepers, but it is not known if this the case. pilot study examined poor false feedback, upon arousal continu...

As prestressed concrete sleepers are continuously exposed to various environmental and loading conditions, it is increasingly crucial analyse their current future serviceability performance. In practice, the main cause of cracking in usually induced by impact loads. The most heavily influenced sections midspan rail-seat area sleepers. This paper investigates effects time-dependent strength degr...

BACKGROUND Inconsistent findings in previous studies of the association between sleep duration and changes in body mass index (BMI) may be attributed to misclassification of sleep duration fluctuations over time and unmeasured confounders such as genetic factors. The aim of the present study was to overcome these failings by using repeated measurements and panel data analysis to examine the sle...
