A skew loop is a closed curve without parallel tangent lines. We prove: The only complete surfaces in R with a point of positive curvature and no skew loops are the quadrics. We present a single operation for constructing skew diagrams whose corresponding skew Schur functions are equal. This combinatorial operation naturally generalises and unifies all results of this type to date. Moreover, our operation suggests a closely related condition that we conjecture is necessary and sufficient for skew diagrams to yield equal skew Schur functions.

Categorical skew lattices are a variety of skew lattices on which the natural partial order is especially well behaved. While most skew lattices of interest are categorical, not all are. They are characterized by a countable family of forbidden subalgebras. We also consider the subclass of strictly categorical skew lattices.
