Orthogonal dimers of Bodipy were recently shown to be efficient generators of singlet oxygen. However, these dyes require green light for excitation, which would be very quickly attenuated inside the mammalian tissues. We now demonstrate that when these dyes are covalently attached to UCNPs, near IR irradiation results in very efficient generation of singlet oxygen.

[reaction: see text]. Oxazolidinone-functionalized enecarbamates show contrasting behavior upon oxidation by singlet oxygen and by ozone. The observed stereoselectivity difference indicates that the oxidation with ozone is subject to classic steric effects, whereas the very high selectivity in the photooxidation with singlet oxygen is derived from vibrational deactivation.

Endogenous chromophores in human skin, when exposed to sunlight, generate harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is one of the common chromophores in human tissue. A series of aromatic cyanoacrylates were tested as quenchers of excited singlet and triplet states of PpIX. While the diaryl cyanoacrylate () did not quench excited singlet or triplet states of PpIX, some cya...

The capacity of various furocoumarins to generate singlet oxygen in aqueous solution has been determined. The antiproliferative and the skin-photosensitizing activities of the same furocoumarins did not show any correlation with the capacity to generate the singlet oxygen, while these photobiological properties could be correlated with the capacity of furocoumarins to induce photolesions to the...

Anti-oxidative activities of mytiloxanthin, a metabolite of fucoxanthin in shellfish and tunicates, were investigated. Mytiloxanthin showed almost the same activities for quenching singlet oxygen and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation as those of astaxanthin, which is a well-known singlet oxygen quencher. Furthermore, mytiloxanthin showed excellent scavenging activity for hydroxyl radicals an...

Chloroplast Membranes, Lipid Peroxidation, Singlet Oxygen, H erbicide Dam age, Chloroplast Pigments The breakdown of chlorophylls, carotenoids, and linolenic acid together with the formation o f malondialdehyde and ethane was followed in isolated pea chloroplast membranes. Breakdown was enhanced by light, oxygen, D 20 and rose bengal, but retarded by crocetin. The results are discussed in relat...

A photoresponsive drug releasing system based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) was developed. A model drug was decorated on the surfaces via singlet oxygen sensitive linkers and a singlet oxygen-generating photosensitizer was loaded in the mesopores of the MSN. An on-demand drug releasing system was successfully developed by irradiation with long-wavelength light.

Novel polymeric photosensitizers for singlet oxygen production in water are described. The polymers contain rose bengal (4,5,6,7-tetrachloro-2',4',5',7'–tetraiodo-fluorescein) chromophores covalently attached to the polymer chain. The quantum yields of singlet oxygen formation and photooxidation of phenol in water have been determined. The methods of separation of photosensitizer from the react...

The production of singlet oxygen was measured indirectly for three classes of photosensitizers: porphyrins (Photofrin II, TPPS4), chlorins (MACE, DACE), and a phthalocyanine (CASPc). Buffered solutions of sensitizers and singlet oxygen acceptors were irradiated with a CW dye laser and the oxygen depletion was monitored electrochemically with a Clark-type microelectrode. A comparison of oxygen-d...
