DNA containing repetitive sequences displays richer dynamics than heterogeneous sequences. In the genome the number of repeat units of repetitive sequences, known as microsatellites, may vary during replication by DNA slippage and their expansion gives rise to serious disorders. We studied the mechanical properties of repetitive DNA using dynamic force spectroscopy and found striking difference...

A multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA) using six microsatellite markers was assessed in 127 Candida glabrata isolates. Thirty-seven different genotypes, stable both in vitro and in vivo, were observed. The highest discriminatory power (D = 0.902) was reached by using only four markers. MLVA seems to be relevant for C. glabrata typing.

A total of nine microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized in the Chilean kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory. Using two different enriched libraries, we observed 1-14 alleles per locus in two samples of 21 kelp individuals each. The observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.05 to 0.80 and all loci are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for one or both samples. Seventeen samples collected from diff...

We fit a Markov chain model of microsatellite evolution introduced by Kruglyak et al. to data on all di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide repeats in the yeast genome. Our results suggest that many features of the distribution of abundance and length of microsatellites can be explained by this simple model, which incorporates a competition between slippage events and base pair substitutions, with no n...

A microsatellite-enriched genomic library for marble goby (Oxyeleotris marmoratus), a freshwater fish of considerable economic value, was obtained. A total of 16 microsatellite markers were successfully isolated and characterized in a population from the Mekong River in Vietnam. These markers had 2-20 alleles with expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.0370 to 0.8927. Linkage equilibrium was ob...

Three monomorphic and four highly polymorphic microsatellites of Nectomys squamipes were isolated and characterised in a sample of 141 specimens from eight different Brazilian localities. These seven microsatellites and four others previously described in this species were tested in seven other nonfocus sigmodontine species. At least three loci were successfully amplified in every species, but ...

Unlinked autosomal microsatellites in six Jewish and two non-Jewish populations were genotyped, and the relationships among these populations were explored. Based on considerations of clustering, pairwise population differentiation, and genetic distance, we found that the Libyan Jewish group retains genetic signatures distinguishable from those of the other populations, in agreement with some h...

We analyzed the genetic variability of 40 watermelon accessions collected from 8 regions of Northeastern Brazil using microsatellite markers, in order to suggest strategies of conservation and utilization of genetic variability in this species. These accessions are not commercial cultivars. They were sampled in areas of traditional farmers that usually keep their own seeds for future plantings ...

Laser-powered lightcraft systems that deliver microsatellites to low earth orbit have been studied for the Air Force Research Laboratory. One result of this Study has been discovery of the significant influence of laser wavelength on the power lost during laser beam propagation through Earth’s atmosphere and in space. Here, energy and power losses in the laser beam are extremely sensitive to wa...
