T his article discusses the estimation of time-domain sinewave peak amplitudes based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) data. Such an operation sounds simple, but the scalloping loss characteristic of FFTs complicates the procedure. Here we present novel multiplier-free methods to accurately estimate sinewave amplitudes, based on FFT data, that greatly reduce scalloping loss problems.

Memory is, therefore, neither perception nor conception, but a state or affection of these, conditioned by the lapse of time. As already observed, there is no such thing as memory of the present while present; for the present is object only of perception, and the future, of expectation, but the object of memory is the past. All memory, therefore, implies a time elapsed; consequently only those ...

At Eurocrypt 2010, Howgrave-Graham and Joux described an algorithm for solving hard knapsacks of density close to 1 in time Õ(2) and memory Õ(2), thereby improving a 30-year old algorithm by Shamir and Schroeppel. In this paper we extend the Howgrave-Graham– Joux technique to get an algorithm with running time down to Õ(2). An implementation shows the practicability of the technique. Another ch...

Bailey and Crandall [4] recently formulated “Hypothesis A”, a general principle to explain the (conjectured) normality of the binary expansion of constants like π and other related numbers, or more generally the base b expansion of such constants for an integer b ≥ 2. This paper shows that a basic mechanism underlying their principle, which is a relation between single orbits of two discrete dy...

In a recent paper, Aidan Lyon and Mark Colyvan have proposed an explanation of the structure of the bee’s honeycomb based on the mathematical Honeycomb Conjecture. This explanation has instantly become one of the standard examples in the philosophical debate on mathematical explanations of physical phenomena. In this critical note, I argue that the explanation is not scientifically adequate. Th...
